How to Rename Your Vintage Story Server
Learn how to change your Vintage Story server name from the RiverHosting panel so players see the right name when they browse or connect to your server.
Your Vintage Story server name is the label players see when they look at the server browser or share your server with friends. If you are still using the default name or you just want something that fits your community better, you can change it in a few clicks from the RiverHosting panel without touching any files manually.
Before you start
- You need an active Vintage Story server on your RiverHosting account.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com before following these steps.
- Your server does not need to be stopped to make this change, but a restart is required for the new name to take effect.
Choose something short and recognisable. A clear name makes it easier for your friends to spot your server in the browser list.
1. How to change your Vintage Story server name
The quickest way to rename your server is through the Server Config page in the panel. This page gives you a built-in editor for your server's main settings, so you do not need to open any configuration files by hand.
- Log in to panel.riverhosting.com and open your Vintage Story server.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- Find the server name field. It is usually labelled something like Server Name or Name.
- Clear the existing name and type your new server name.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
- Restart your server so the new name loads. You can do this by clicking Restart on the Console page or from the top of your server page.
Once your server finishes restarting, the new name will appear in the server browser and on any connection screen your players use.
2. How to confirm the name has changed
After the restart, you can quickly check that the new name is live by looking at the server console output.
- In the left-hand menu, click Console.
- Wait for the server to finish starting up. You should see startup messages scroll through.
- Look for a line that mentions your server name in the startup log. If it shows the new name, the change has applied correctly.
If the old name still appears after a restart, go back to Server Config and double-check that you saved your changes before restarting. It is easy to navigate away before clicking Save.
Troubleshooting
- The Server Config page does not show a name field. Try scrolling down the page, as settings are sometimes listed further down. If you still cannot find it, the name setting may be stored in a config file. Open the File Manager from the left-hand menu and look for your main server configuration file, such as
serverconfig.json, where you can edit the name value directly. - The server name is not updating after a restart. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. Changes that are not saved will not be applied.
- Players can still see the old name. Ask your players to refresh their server browser list. Some games and clients cache server details locally for a short time, so a refresh should pull the updated name.
- The name shows blank or broken characters. Avoid using special characters or symbols in your server name. Stick to standard letters, numbers, and spaces for the best compatibility.
