How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your Vintage Story Server
Learn how to change the maximum number of players allowed on your Vintage Story server using the RiverHosting panel so your community always has the right amount of room.
By default, your Vintage Story server allows a set number of players to connect at the same time. If your community is growing and you need more room, or if you want to keep things small and cosy for a private group, you can change this limit easily from the RiverHosting panel without touching any files manually.
Before you start
- Make sure you are logged in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Select your Vintage Story server from the server list.
- Your server can be running when you make this change, but a restart will be required for it to take effect.
If you are increasing the player slot count to host an event or open your server to more friends, apply the change a few minutes before they are due to join so the restart is out of the way.
1. Open the Server Config page
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Vintage Story server.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- The Server Config page will load with the main settings for your server.
The Server Config page is a built-in editor that lets you change common server settings without editing any files by hand. It is the easiest and recommended way to adjust your Vintage Story server options.
2. Change the maximum player slot count
- On the Server Config page, look for the setting labelled Max Players (sometimes shown as the maximum connections or player slots setting).
- Click on the current value and type in your new player limit. For example, enter
10for ten player slots. - Once you have entered your new value, click Save to apply the change.
Adding more player slots does not automatically improve your server's performance. If you plan to run a large number of players, keep an eye on your server's resource usage. Contact support if you think you may need a plan upgrade.
3. Restart your server to apply the change
- After saving, go back to your server's main page.
- Click the Restart button at the top of the page.
- Wait for the server to finish restarting. You can watch the progress in the Console tab.
- Once the server is back online, the new player slot limit will be active.
Your Vintage Story server will now accept up to your new player limit. Players will see an updated slot count when browsing the server list or attempting to connect.
Troubleshooting
- The slot count did not change after saving. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. Open Server Config again and check that your new value is shown.
- Players are still being turned away after the change. Confirm that the server has fully restarted by checking the Console tab. If the server is still starting up, wait until the startup messages have finished before players try to join.
- I cannot find the Max Players setting on the Server Config page. Scroll through the full list of options on the page, as settings are sometimes grouped differently depending on your server version. If you still cannot find it, try searching the page using your browser's built-in find tool (usually Ctrl+F or Cmd+F).
- The server crashes after increasing slots. A high player count can put more load on the server. Try a more modest increase first, and contact RiverHosting support if the issue continues.
