How to Enable and Configure a Password on Your Vintage Story Server
Learn how to set a password on your Vintage Story server using the RiverHosting panel so only the players you invite can join.
By default, your Vintage Story server is open to anyone who knows the address. If you want to keep your world private, you can set a password so only players you share it with can connect. This takes just a minute from the RiverHosting panel and does not require editing any files by hand.
Before you start
- Make sure you are logged in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Open your Vintage Story server from your server list.
- You will need to restart your server after saving changes for them to take effect.
The new password will not apply until you restart your server. Players who are already connected will be able to stay in the session until they disconnect.
1. How to set a password on your Vintage Story server
The easiest way to set a server password is through the built-in Server Config page in the panel. This lets you change the setting without touching any configuration files directly.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and select your Vintage Story server.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- Look for the password field. It may be labelled Password or Server Password depending on your panel version.
- Type your chosen password into the field.
- Click Save to apply the change.
- Restart your server using the Restart button at the top of the page so the new password takes effect.
Use a password that is easy to share with your friends but not easy for strangers to guess. Avoid very short passwords like 1234 or pass.
2. How to share the password with your players
Once the password is set, your players will be prompted to enter it when they try to join. You will need to share the password with them directly, since the game does not send it automatically.
- Find your server address by clicking Network in the left-hand menu. This page shows your server IP and port.
- Share both the server address and the password with the players you want to invite.
- When a player opens Vintage Story and tries to connect to your server, they will see a password prompt. They enter the password you gave them and then join normally.
If you have set up a custom subdomain using the Subdomain Manager, you can share that address instead of the raw IP. An address like survival.playriver.net is much easier for players to remember and type correctly.
3. How to remove or change the password
If you want to open your server to the public, or simply update the password, you can do that at any time from the same Server Config page.
- Go back to Server Config in the left-hand menu.
- To remove the password, clear the password field so it is completely empty, then click Save.
- To change the password, replace the existing value with your new password, then click Save.
- Restart your server so the change takes effect.
Leaving the password field blank makes your server joinable by anyone who has the address. Make sure this is intentional before saving.
Troubleshooting
- Players are not seeing a password prompt. Make sure you restarted the server after saving the change. A save without a restart will not apply the new settings.
- The password field is not visible in Server Config. Try scrolling down the page, as the password setting may not be near the top of the list. If you still cannot find it, you can edit the server configuration file directly through the File Manager. The relevant file is usually
serverconfig.jsonin your server root, and the field to set isPassword. - A player is entering the right password but still cannot join. Double-check that the password was saved correctly and that the server was restarted after the change. Also confirm there are no extra spaces at the beginning or end of the password.
- The password seems to reset after an update or reinstall. If your server was reinstalled or its configuration was reset, you will need to set the password again through Server Config.
