How to Connect to Your Vintage Story Server
Find out how to connect to your Vintage Story server using the RiverHosting panel so you and your friends can start playing together straight away.
Once your Vintage Story server is up and running, connecting to it is straightforward. This guide walks you through finding your server's connection details from the RiverHosting panel and entering them into the game so you can jump in and start playing.
Before you start
- Make sure your Vintage Story server is powered on. You can check its status from the Console page in the RiverHosting panel.
- Make sure you have Vintage Story installed on your PC. You can buy and download it from the official Vintage Story website.
- If you set a server password, make sure anyone joining has it ready.
If the server is stopped, players will not be able to connect. Head to the Console page in the panel and click Start if you see the server is offline.
1. Find your server's connection details
Your server's IP address and port are listed on the Network page in the RiverHosting panel. Here is how to find them:
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Click on your Vintage Story server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Network.
- You will see your server's IP address and game port listed here. Note both values down.
Vintage Story servers typically use port 42420 by default. Your Network page will confirm the exact port assigned to your server.
2. Connect to your server in Vintage Story
With your connection details ready, follow these steps inside the game:
- Open Vintage Story on your PC and click Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Click Add server or Connect to server.
- In the server address field, enter your server's IP address followed by a colon and the port number. It will look something like this:
123.45.67.89:42420 Replace the IP and port with the values shown on your Network page in the panel.
- If you have set a server password, enter it when prompted.
- Click Connect and you should join the server within a few seconds.
If everything is correct, Vintage Story will connect you to the server and you will appear in the world. Share your connection details with friends so they can join you.
3. Set up a custom subdomain so your address is easier to share
If you would rather share a friendly address instead of a raw IP and port, you can set up a custom subdomain through the RiverHosting panel at no extra cost.
- In the left-hand menu for your server, click Subdomain Manager.
- Choose a name for your subdomain and pick one of the available base domains:
playriver.netplayminecraft.proplayriver.xyz
- Save your subdomain. Once it is active, players can connect using your custom address instead of the raw IP.
Something like survival.playriver.net:42420 is much easier to share and remember than a plain IP address. ::: :::note[Port still required] Even with a custom subdomain, players will still need to include the port number when connecting unless you are on a setup where the port is already standard. Check your Network page to confirm the port your server uses.
Troubleshooting
- Connection timed out or refused: Check that your server is running. Open the Console page and look for any error messages. Click Start if the server is stopped.
- Wrong password: If you or a friend cannot get past the password prompt, double-check the password set in your Server Config page and make sure it matches exactly, including capitalisation.
- Using the wrong port: Always use the port shown on the Network page. Do not guess or use a default port if your panel shows a different value.
- Server version mismatch: If the game shows a version error on connect, your client version may not match the server version. Check which version is running from the Server Config or Startup page and update your client to match.
- Custom subdomain not working yet: New subdomains can take a few minutes to become active after you save them. Wait a short while and try again.
