How to Add and Manage Admins on Your Vintage Story Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to grant admin access and manage roles on your Vintage Story server using the RiverHosting panel so trusted players can help you keep things running smoothly.

Running a Vintage Story server is a lot more enjoyable when trusted friends can help you manage things. Admins can kick or ban players, adjust settings in-game, and keep the server in good shape while you are away. The RiverHosting panel gives you a dedicated page to handle all of this without editing any files by hand.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Vintage Story server on RiverHosting. Log in to the panel at panel.riverhosting.com to get started.
    • The player you want to make an admin must have joined the server at least once so their account is recognised.
    • You will need to be the server owner or have full panel access to make changes on the Admins & Roles page.
    Know your roles

Vintage Story uses a role system rather than a simple admin on/off toggle. Roles control exactly what each player can and cannot do, so you can give a friend limited moderation access without giving them full control.

    1. How to open the Admins and Roles page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Click on your Vintage Story server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Admins & Roles.

This page shows all the current role assignments on your server. From here you can grant elevated roles to players, adjust what each role allows, and remove access when needed.

    2. How to grant a player an admin role

    1. On the Admins & Roles page, find the section for assigning roles to players.
    2. Enter the in-game username of the player you want to promote.
    3. Select the role you want to assign from the available options. Common roles include moderator-level access and full admin access.
    4. Save your changes. The player will have the new role the next time they connect, or immediately if the server is already running.
    Double-check the username

Vintage Story usernames are case-sensitive. Make sure you enter the player's username exactly as it appears in-game to avoid assigning the role to the wrong account.

    3. How to adjust what a role can do

If you want to fine-tune the permissions for a role rather than using the default settings, you can edit the role directly from the same page.

    1. On the Admins & Roles page, locate the role you want to edit.
    2. Click the edit or configure option next to that role.
    3. Review the available permission toggles and adjust them to suit what you want that role to be able to do. For example, you might allow a trusted player to kick users but not wipe the world.
    4. Save the updated role settings.
Role changes apply to everyone with that role

If you change the permissions on a role, every player assigned to that role will be affected immediately. Create a separate role if you need different permissions for different players.

    4. How to remove or demote a player

If you need to take away a player's elevated access, the process is straightforward.

    1. Go to Admins & Roles in the left-hand menu.
    2. Find the player whose role you want to remove.
    3. Remove or change their role assignment using the option next to their name.
    4. Save your changes. The player will lose the extra permissions on their next connection or immediately if connected now.
    Communicate changes to your team

If you remove someone's admin access, it is good practice to let them know in advance so there are no surprises. Sudden permission changes can confuse players who rely on those tools to help manage your community.

    Troubleshooting

    • The player's name is not being accepted. Make sure the player has joined the server at least once. Vintage Story registers the username when a player first connects, so names that have never joined will not be found.
    • The role change does not seem to be taking effect. Try restarting the server from the Console tab to force the new role configuration to reload. You can also ask the player to disconnect and reconnect.
    • A player still has admin access after you removed it. Check whether they are assigned to more than one role. If another role also grants elevated access, you will need to remove that assignment too.
    • You cannot see the Admins and Roles page. This page is only available to the server owner and any panel subusers who have been granted full access. If you are a subuser and cannot see it, ask the server owner to update your panel permissions.
