How to Choose PvP or PvE Rules for Your V Rising Server with the Game Rules Page
Learn how to pick a preset or build your own ruleset on the Game Rules page in the RiverHosting panel so your V Rising world plays exactly the way you want.
Want a relaxed PvE world for friends, or a hardcore PvP server with castle raids? In V Rising, this is controlled by your game rules. The Game Rules page in the RiverHosting panel lets you choose a ready-made preset or tune the rules one by one, with no file editing needed.
There is one important thing to know first: V Rising bakes the rules into a world when that world is first created. This guide shows you how to set your rules and how to apply them to a fresh world.
Before you start
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your V Rising server.
- Your server must be stopped before you can save changes on the Game Rules page.
- Changing a preset or a rule only affects a brand-new world. An existing save keeps the rules it was created with.
- Take a backup first if you care about the current world. Castle progression cannot be recovered once a world is wiped.
Castle progression cannot be recovered once a world is wiped. Use the Back up now button on the Game Rules page, or create a backup on the Backups page, before you change anything.
1. How to pick a preset on the Game Rules page
Presets are the quickest way to get a complete ruleset in a few clicks.
- Open Console and click Stop. Wait until the status badge shows OFFLINE.
- In the left-hand menu, open Game Rules (in the GAME section).
- Click the back-up button Back up now to save the active world before you continue.
- Open the Game Settings Preset dropdown and choose one of the options:
- Custom (use my settings below)
- Standard PvP
- Standard PvP: Daily Siege
- Standard PvP: Weekend Siege
- Standard PvP: No Siege
- Standard PvE
- Solo PvP
- Duo PvP
- Trio PvP
- Hardcore PvP
- Hardcore Duo PvP
- Hardcore Trio PvP
- Click Save Game Rules.
While a named preset is selected, every field underneath is greyed out with the message "Ignored while a preset is selected. Choose Custom to edit." To change individual rules, switch the preset to Custom first.
2. How to customise individual rules
If no preset fits, choose Custom (use my settings below) and edit the rules yourself.
- On the Game Rules page, set Game Settings Preset to Custom (use my settings below).
- Under Core Rules, choose how your world works:
- Game Mode: PvP or PvE.
- Castle Damage: Always, Time-restricted or Never. Time-restricted gives a raid window and protects offline players outside it.
- Player Damage: Always or Time-restricted.
- Loot on Death: Anyone, Clan members only or Only self.
- Castle Heart Limit: Per player or Per clan.
- Castle Decay: Never, Time-restricted or Always.
- Soul Shard (Relic) Spawns: Unique (one per server) or Plentiful.
- Under Progression & Rates, adjust the multipliers. A value of 1 is the vanilla experience, higher is more, lower is less:
- Resource Yield
- Inventory Stack Size
- General Drop Rate
- Blood Drain Rate
- Durability Loss
- Build Cost
- Recipe / Craft Cost
- Craft Speed
- Research Cost
- Refinement Speed
- Servant Convert Speed
- Under Convenience, switch on or off: Loot Enemy Containers, Blood-bound Equipment, Teleport with Bound Items, Global Chat, All Waypoints Unlocked, Free Castle Claim and Free Castle Destroy.
- Click Save Game Rules. If you change your mind before saving, click Revert.
Change a few rules at a time. A small tweak to Resource Yield or Craft Speed is often all a server needs.
Some fields carry the note "Applies only on server versions that support this setting." If you see it, that rule may have no effect on older server versions.
3. How to apply your new rules to a fresh world
Because rules are baked into a world when it is created, your new preset or rules will only show up in a new world. Here is how to start one.
- Make sure the server is still stopped.
- In the left-hand menu, open Server Config.
- Find the Active Save field and type a new world name, for example
pve-world. - Click Save Config.
- Go to Console and click Start.
V Rising creates a new world named after your Active Save on first start, using the rules you saved. Your old world is left on disk and is not deleted.
To go back to an older world, stop the server, open Worlds & Saves, click Set active next to the world you want, then start the server again. That world keeps the rules it was created with.
Once the new world has finished loading, your players can join and the rules you chose will be in effect from the very first minute.
Troubleshooting
- The rule fields are greyed out. A named preset is selected. Change Game Settings Preset to Custom (use my settings below) to edit them.
- I cannot save my changes. The server must be stopped. Use Stop on the Console page, wait for OFFLINE, then try again.
- My world still plays with the old rules. Existing saves keep their original rules. Start a new world by giving Active Save a new name on the Server Config page, then start the server.
- I want my old world back. Open Worlds & Saves, click Set active on the old world, and start the server. If needed, you can also restore a backup from the Backups page.
- My first-time setup picked the wrong rule set. You can reopen the quick setup wizard from the header chip, or simply change the preset on the Game Rules page.
