How to Change the Difficulty on Your Soulmask Server
Learn how to adjust the difficulty on your Soulmask server from the RiverHosting panel so you can tailor the challenge level to suit your tribe.
Soulmask lets you shape how tough the world feels for everyone on your server. Whether you want a relaxed survival experience or a brutal challenge that tests every decision, you can adjust the difficulty from directly inside the RiverHosting panel without editing any files by hand.
Before you start
- You need an active Soulmask server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Stop your server before changing difficulty settings. This helps make sure the changes are applied cleanly when the server starts back up.
Changing difficulty settings mid-session can sometimes affect active gameplay. Ask your players to save and log off before you stop the server and apply changes.
1. Open the Server Config page
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Click on your Soulmask server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- This page contains the main settings for your Soulmask server, including combat, survival, and world difficulty options.
The Server Config page lets you change these settings with simple fields and dropdowns. You do not need to open or edit any config file manually.
2. Adjust the difficulty settings
- On the Server Config page, look through the available settings for difficulty-related options. These typically control things like enemy damage, player damage taken, resource gathering rates, and crafting costs.
- Change the values to match the experience you want for your players. Higher damage values make the game harder. Lower resource costs or faster gathering makes survival easier.
- Take a moment to read each setting label so you understand what it affects before saving.
- When you are happy with your changes, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.
If you are running a server for a mixed group of players, consider starting with slightly easier settings and adjusting from there. It is much easier to make things harder gradually than to frustrate players right away.
3. Restart your server to apply the changes
- After saving your settings on the Server Config page, go back to the main server page.
- Click Start to bring your server back online. If your server is already running, use Restart instead.
- Wait for the server to finish starting up. You can watch the Console tab to see when it is ready.
- Once it is online, log in to your Soulmask server and confirm that the new difficulty feels correct in-game.
Your Soulmask server will now run with the updated difficulty settings every time it starts.
Troubleshooting
- Changes do not seem to take effect: Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting the server. If you navigated away without saving, your changes were not stored.
- The server is not starting after changes: Go to the Console tab and look for any error messages. If a setting value was entered incorrectly, it may prevent the server from starting. Return to Server Config and double-check your entries.
- Settings reset after a restart: This can happen if the server is set to overwrite config files on startup. Check the Startup tab to see if any startup variables are forcing default values, and adjust them if needed.
- Players report the difficulty feels the same: Some difficulty changes only apply to newly spawned enemies or newly started sessions. Existing enemies in the world may keep their old stats until the area reloads or players move to a new region.
