How to Upload Your Own Save to Your Sons Of The Forest Server

3 min read·Updated Nov 3, 2026

Learn how to upload a save from your PC with the Save Slots page in the RiverHosting panel so your group can keep playing the same world on your server.

Already built a base on your own PC and want your friends to keep playing it without you hosting? You can upload that save to your RiverHosting server from the Save Slots page. This guide shows you how to zip your save, upload it, and tell the server to continue it.

Before you start

  • Start your server at least once and let it save. The save folder only appears after the first start and first save.
  • The server needs a valid config file. If you have never started it, start it once first. If the config is damaged, repair it on the Server Config page.
  • You need access to the save folder on the PC that holds the world.
  • Only .zip files are accepted. Other archive types such as .rar will not work.
Take a backup first

Uploading a save and continuing it replaces what the server loads in that slot. Open the Backups page in the RiverHosting panel and click Create Backup before you start. A full server backup covers all save slots at once.

1. How to zip your save on your PC

  1. Find the numbered folder for the world you want to move. <SteamID> is your own Steam ID folder.
  2. Zip that numbered folder using your computer's zip tool.

On the PC that holds your world, open the saves folder:

AppData\LocalLow\Endnight\SonsOfTheForest\Saves\<SteamID>\Multiplayer\<number>
Zip the folder itself

The zip must contain the numbered folder itself, not just the files inside it. If you zip only the contents, the server will not recognise the save.

2. How to upload the save and continue it

  1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Sons Of The Forest server.
  2. Click Save Slots in the left-hand menu.
  3. Click Upload Save (.zip) and choose the zip file you made.
  4. Wait for the upload to finish. Click Refresh if the new slot does not show up. Each slot shows its Size and Last saved time.
  5. On the new slot, click Continue this save.
  6. Check that the slot shows the Active · Continue badge.
  7. When the restart prompt appears, restart your server. You can use the Restart button on the Console page or the Quick Console tab (the >_ tab on the right edge of other pages).
Changes apply on restart

Slot changes only take effect the next time the server starts. Until you restart, the server keeps using its old setting.

Once the server is back online, join it and check that your base and items are where you left them.

Game mode stays the same

An existing save keeps the game mode it was created with. Changing Game Mode on the Server Config page later will not convert an uploaded world.

3. How to protect your uploaded world

  1. Go back to Save Slots.
  2. On your uploaded slot, click Backup.
  3. Scroll to the Slot Backups list to see the new archive. From there you can Restore, Download or Delete it.
  4. To roll a slot back later, click Restore on a slot backup, then click Continue this save on that slot and restart the server.
Avoid New (overwrite)

The New (overwrite) button on a slot starts a fresh world and overwrites the save in that slot on the next start. Do not click it on a world you want to keep.

Troubleshooting

  • I cannot find my save folder on the server: The folder only appears after the first start and first save. Start the server, wait for it to save, then open Save Slots again.
  • The upload is rejected: Make sure the file is a .zip. Other archive types are not accepted.
  • The upload worked but the world is not recognised: The zip probably does not contain the numbered folder itself. Zip the numbered folder again and upload it.
  • I cannot switch slots: The server needs a valid config file. Start the server once if you have not, or open Server Config and save to repair a malformed file.
  • The server started a new world instead: Check that your slot shows Active · Continue, not Active · New world. Click Continue this save and restart again.
  • Nothing changed after I clicked Continue this save: Restart the server. Slot changes apply on the next start.
  • The Players page is empty: It only lists players who connected while the server was running and the panel could read the log.
