How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your SCUM Server
Learn how to change the maximum number of players on your SCUM server using the RiverHosting panel so you can open up more slots or keep your server small and focused.
By default, your SCUM server comes with a set number of player slots. Whether you want to invite a larger group of survivors or keep things tight with a smaller private community, you can change the maximum player count directly from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files by hand.
Before you start
- Make sure you are logged in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Open your SCUM server from the server list.
- Keep in mind that your hosting plan may have a maximum slot limit. If you need more slots than your current plan allows, you may need to upgrade your plan first from the billing portal.
- It is a good idea to stop your server before making changes, then start it again once you are done.
Changing server settings while the server is running can sometimes cause the new value to be overwritten on the next save. Stop the server before making changes to be safe.
1. Open the Server Config page
The Server Config page in the RiverHosting panel is where you manage the most important settings for your SCUM server, including the player slot count.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and select your SCUM server.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- The Server Config page will load with all the available settings for your server.
The Server Config page lets you change common settings from a simple form. You do not need to edit any config files directly.
2. Change the maximum player slot count
Once you are on the Server Config page, find the setting that controls how many players can join your server at the same time.
- Look for the Max Players setting (sometimes labelled as the maximum player count or player slots).
- Change the value to the number of slots you want. For example, enter
20for 20 player slots, or64for a larger server. - Once you have set the value you want, scroll down and click Save to apply your changes.
The number you can set here may be capped by your current hosting plan. If you cannot set the value as high as you would like, check your plan details in the billing portal and consider upgrading.
3. Restart your server to apply the changes
After saving, you need to start (or restart) your server for the new slot count to take effect.
- Go back to the main page of your server in the panel.
- Click Start if your server is stopped, or Restart if it is already running.
- Wait for the server to finish loading. You can watch the output in the Console tab to see when it is ready.
- Once the server is online, the new player slot count will be active.
Your SCUM server will now allow up to the number of players you set. New players joining the server will see the updated slot count in the server browser.
Troubleshooting
- The slot count did not change after restarting. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If you closed the page without saving, the change will not have been applied.
- The server is still showing the old slot count. Give the server a minute or two to fully start up and register in the server browser. It can take a short time for the browser listing to refresh.
- I cannot set the slot count higher than a certain number. Your current hosting plan may cap the maximum player slots. Log in to the billing portal to review your plan, or contact support for help with an upgrade.
- The Server Config page is not saving. Try refreshing the page and making the change again. If the problem continues, reach out to support.
