How to Set Up User Groups and Passwords on Your Enshrouded Server
Learn how to use the User Groups page in the RiverHosting panel to give friends and guests their own passwords and permissions, so everyone gets the right level of access.
Enshrouded does not have an admin list or a whitelist. Instead, access works with passwords. Each user group has its own password, and the password a player types when joining decides which group they land in and what they are allowed to do. This guide shows you how to manage those groups from the User Groups page in the RiverHosting panel.
Before you start
- You need access to your server in the RiverHosting panel.
- If you are a subuser, your account needs permission to see the User Groups page.
- Your server must be stopped before you can save changes to groups.
- Enshrouded has no Players page in the panel and ignores typed console commands. Access is managed only on the User Groups page.
RiverHosting starts you with four tiers. Admin has all permissions. Friend has everything except Kick & Ban and holds 1 reserved slot. Guest has no permissions and holds 3 reserved slots. Visitor has no permissions and no reserved slots.
1. How to open User Groups and stop your server
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Enshrouded server.
- Click Console in the left-hand menu, then click Stop and wait until the status badge shows OFFLINE.
- In the left-hand menu, under GAME, click User Groups.
You will see each group as a card with its name, password, reserved slots and permissions.
Enshrouded only reads its settings when it boots. The page will not let you save groups while the server is running.
2. How to change a group's password
- On the User Groups page, find the group you want to change.
- Type a new value in the Password field. You can use the reveal button to see what you typed and the copy button to copy it.
- Click Save Groups.
- Go back to Console and click Start.
Share each password only with the people who should have that level of access. A player simply enters the password for their group when joining.
Every group needs its own unique password. Enshrouded crashes on startup if two groups share one. Passwords also cannot be purely numbers, so add at least one letter. The panel checks these rules before it saves.
Changing the Admin password
The Admin group is always first and cannot be removed. Its password is labelled "(server admin credential)" and it must always have one. To pick a strong one quickly, click Generate a new random admin password, then click Save Groups. The panel writes this password into the config every time the server boots.
Give the Admin group a different password from the one you hand out to regular players. That way a regular password never grants admin rights.
3. How to choose what each group can do
Each group has a Permissions section with these switches:
- Kick & Ban: lets the player remove others from the server using the in-game player list.
- Access Inventories
- Edit Base
- Extend Base
- Edit World
- Make sure your server is stopped.
- On the User Groups page, tick or untick the permissions for the group.
- Click Save Groups.
- Start the server from Console.
If you change your mind before saving, click Revert to go back to the last saved groups.
Keep Admin for yourself, use Friend for trusted builders, and use Guest for people who should only look around. Give each a different password and share it only with the right people.
4. How to reserve slots for a group
Reserved Slots are seats held for that tier even when the server is full. This is handy if you always want room for your closest friends.
- Stop your server from Console.
- Open User Groups and change the Reserved Slots number for the group.
- Click Save Groups and start the server again.
The panel warns you if your reserved slots add up to more than your player slots. If you see that warning, lower the numbers or raise your player slot count.
5. How to add or remove a group
To add a new tier:
- Stop your server and open User Groups.
- Click Add Group. You can have up to 10 groups.
- Enter a Group Name (every group needs one) and a unique Password.
- Set the Permissions and Reserved Slots you want.
- Click Save Groups, then start the server.
To remove a group, click Remove this group on its card, then click Save Groups. The Admin group has no remove button.
Making a group open to everyone
Groups other than Admin have a Public (no password) switch, also shown as Set public (open). When a group is public, players can join it without typing a password.
If more than one group is open, anyone joining lands in the highest-permission open tier. The panel shows a warning when this happens. Keep open groups to a single, low-permission tier.
6. How players join with their group password
- Start your server and wait for the status badge to show ONLINE.
- Copy the address from the IP chip at the top of your server page.
- In Enshrouded, choose Join via IP and enter the address.
- When asked for a password, type the password of the group you want to join.
There is no password chip next to the IP in the panel, so you will need to look up each password on the User Groups page and share it yourself.
Troubleshooting
- I cannot save my groups. Check that the server is fully stopped. Fields and saving are disabled while it is running or still stopping.
- The panel says a password is not allowed. Make sure every password is unique and is not only numbers, and that every group has a name.
- A player has the wrong permissions. They may have typed a different group's password. Check the passwords on User Groups and look for open groups that could catch them first.
- The server will not start after a change. Open Server Config and look for a warning about a corrupt config. The Config Recovery card there can reset the config to defaults with Reset config to defaults. Be careful, because this wipes every setting and every user group. The Admin password comes back from the server variable. Your world saves are not touched.
- A player cannot kick or ban. Their group needs Kick & Ban ticked. Kicking and banning is done in-game from the player list.
Using Reset config to defaults removes every user group you created and all other server config settings. Only use it if the server cannot start otherwise.
