How to Change the Auto-Save and Backup Intervals on Your Astroneer Server

4 min read·Updated Nov 6, 2026

Learn how to change the Auto-Save Interval and Backup Interval on the Server Config tab of the RiverHosting panel so your Astroneer progress is protected more often.

Astroneer saves your world on a timer, and it also keeps extra backup copies of your save on a second timer. If you want to lose less progress after a crash, or you want fewer saves written, you can change both timers from the RiverHosting panel. This guide shows you how, and how to use one of the automatic backups if you ever need it.

Before you start

  • You need access to your Astroneer server in the RiverHosting panel at https://panel.riverhosting.com.
  • Astroneer only reads its settings on a clean start, so the server must be stopped before you can edit anything. The panel keeps the fields locked while the server is running.
  • Both intervals are set in seconds. For example, 900 seconds is 15 minutes and 7200 seconds is 2 hours.
Default values

The Auto-Save Interval is 900 seconds by default, and the Backup Interval is 7200 seconds by default. The lowest Auto-Save Interval you can use is 60 seconds.

1. How to change the Auto-Save Interval and Backup Interval

  1. Click Console in the left-hand menu.
    Console in the server menu
  2. Click Stop and wait until the status badge at the top of the page shows OFFLINE.
  3. In the GAME section of the left-hand menu, click Astroneer, then the Server Config tab at the top of the page.
Astroneer in the GAME section of the menu, then the Server Config tab
  4. Find the Save & Backup Intervals section.
  5. In Auto-Save Interval (seconds), enter how often the server should save your world. A smaller number saves more often, so you lose less progress if something goes wrong. Remember the minimum is 60.
  6. In Backup Interval (seconds), enter how often the game should create a backup copy of your save. A smaller number gives you more restore points.
  7. Click Save Config.

  8. Go back to Console in the left-hand menu and click Start. Your new intervals apply from this start.
Pick a sensible balance

Very short timers mean more saving work for the server. If your base is large, a value between 300 and 900 seconds for the Auto-Save Interval is a comfortable choice for most groups.

Click Reset on the Server Config page to undo edits you have not saved yet.

2. How to find and use an automatic backup

Every time the Backup Interval passes, Astroneer writes a timestamped backup copy of your save into the same folder as your saves. You can see these on the Save Games tab.

  1. Click Console in the left-hand menu, click Stop, and wait until the status shows OFFLINE.
  2. In the GAME section of the left-hand menu, click Astroneer, then the Save Games tab at the top of the page.
Astroneer in the GAME section of the menu, then the Save Games tab
  3. Look for rows marked Auto-backup (date). The date tells you when the game made that copy. Your current save is marked Active Save.
  4. On the backup you want, choose the action to restore a backup as the active save.
  5. Read the Restore this Backup? message and confirm. This replaces the current save of that name with the backup.
  6. Go back to Console and click Start to load the restored save.
Restoring replaces your current save

When you restore an auto-backup, the current save of that name is replaced. If you want to keep the current version, use the Download action on that save first.

Troubleshooting

  • The fields are greyed out: The server is still running. Stop it from Console, wait for OFFLINE, then return to Server Config.
  • The Auto-Save Interval will not accept my number: The lowest value allowed is 60 seconds. Enter 60 or higher.
  • My new timers do not seem to apply: Changes apply on the next start. Make sure you clicked Save Config before you started the server again.
  • I do not see any Auto-backup rows: Backups appear only after the server has been running long enough for the Backup Interval to pass. If there are no saves at all, Astroneer creates one the first time the server starts and saves.
  • I cannot delete the save I am using: The active save cannot be deleted. Set another save as active first if you need to remove it.
