How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your Astroneer Server
Learn how to change the maximum number of players on your Astroneer server using the RiverHosting panel so you can open up slots for more friends or keep your world more private.
By default, your Astroneer server supports a small number of players. Whether you want to invite a bigger group of friends or limit access to just a couple of people, you can change the maximum player count directly from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files by hand.
Before you start
- Make sure you have access to your server at panel.riverhosting.com.
- You will need to restart your server after making changes for them to take effect.
- Astroneer supports up to 8 players on a dedicated server. Keep your slot count within that limit.
Restart your server after changing the player slot count. Any players currently connected will be disconnected during the restart, so let them know beforehand.
1. How to change the max player slot count
The quickest way to change your player limit is through the Server Config page in the RiverHosting panel. This lets you update the setting without touching any config files directly.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Click on your Astroneer server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- Look for the setting labelled Max Players or a similarly named player limit field.
- Enter the number of player slots you want. The maximum supported value for Astroneer is
8. - Click Save or the equivalent save button on the page.
- Restart your server for the new limit to take effect. You can do this from the top of your server page using the Restart button.
For a private session with friends, a slot count between 2 and 4 works well. If you want a fuller server open to more players, try 6 or 8.
2. How to confirm the change worked
After restarting, you can verify the new player limit is active by checking a couple of things.
- Open the Console from the left-hand menu on your server page.
- Look at the startup log output for a line that references the maximum player count. It should match the number you set.
- Try connecting to the server and inviting friends up to the new limit to confirm it is working as expected.
If you or your friends need the server address or port to connect, go to the Network page in the left-hand menu. It shows your server IP and game port.
Troubleshooting
- The player limit does not seem to have changed. Make sure you clicked Save before restarting. If you closed the page without saving, the change will not have been applied.
- Players are still being rejected even though slots are open. Double-check that the value you entered is a whole number and within the supported range of 1 to 8. Values above 8 may be ignored or cause unexpected behaviour.
- The Server Config page does not show a player limit field. The field name can vary slightly. Look for anything referencing player count, connections, or slots. If you cannot find it, try the File Manager and look inside the main server configuration file for a
MaxPlayersor similar entry. - The server crashes after changing the limit. Revert the value to a lower number and restart again. Very high values may cause instability depending on your server resources.
