How to Set Yourself as the Owner and Get Admin on Your Astroneer Server

3 min read·Updated Nov 5, 2026

Learn how to set the Owner Steam Name on the Server Config page in the RiverHosting panel so you get admin rights and can manage your Astroneer server in game.

On an Astroneer server, the owner is the player who gets admin rights. If the owner name is wrong, the server still runs normally, but nobody gets admin and nothing tells you why. This guide shows you how to set the owner in the RiverHosting panel and check that it worked.

Before you start

  • You need access to your server in the RiverHosting panel at https://panel.riverhosting.com.
  • Know the exact Steam username of the person who should be the owner. It must match letter for letter, including capital letters and symbols.
  • Astroneer only reads its settings on a clean start, so the server must be stopped before you change anything. The panel keeps the fields locked while the server is running.
Why the server must be stopped

Astroneer rewrites its settings when it shuts down. Any change made while the server is running would be discarded, so the panel blocks editing until the server is stopped.

1. How to set the owner on the Server Config page

  1. Click Console in the left-hand menu.
    Console in the server menu
  2. Click Stop and wait until the status badge at the top of the page shows OFFLINE.
  3. In the GAME section of the left-hand menu, click Astroneer, then the Server Config tab at the top of the page.
Astroneer in the GAME section of the menu, then the Server Config tab
  4. Find the Owner section on the page.
  5. Type the owner's Steam username into Owner Steam Name. Copy it exactly as it appears on Steam.
  6. Click Save Config.
  7. Click Console in the left-hand menu, then click Start.
Using the setup wizard

If you used the quick setup wizard, it already asked for your Steam username. You can still correct the name here at any time.

2. How to check that you have admin

  1. Wait for the server status to show ONLINE.
  2. Open Astroneer and join your server with the Steam account that matches the owner name. Use the join password from the Server Password field on Server Config.
  3. In the game, press Esc and look for the Server Admin icon.

If you can open the Server Admin menu, the owner is set up correctly. From there the owner can use options such as kick, ban, saving the world and shutting down the server.

Owner Steam ID filled in automatically

The first time the owner connects, the panel fills in the Owner GUID for you. You do not need to type it.

3. How to change the owner later

  1. Stop the server from the Console page and wait for OFFLINE.
  2. Open the Server Config tab under Astroneer.
  3. Enter the new Steam username in Owner Steam Name.
  4. Click Save Config, then start the server again.

Changing the owner name also clears the saved Owner GUID. It is filled in again when the new owner connects.

Keeping the same owner

If the owner name is correct but the GUID seems wrong, use the Reset button next to Owner GUID while the server is stopped. The server then detects the GUID again the next time the owner connects.

Troubleshooting

  • The fields are greyed out: the server is still running. Stop it from the Console page and wait for OFFLINE.
  • No Server Admin icon in game: check that Owner Steam Name matches the Steam username exactly, including capitals and symbols. Stop the server, correct it, click Save Config and start again.
  • The wrong player is the owner: follow the steps in section 3 to set the correct name.
  • I cannot see who is online in the panel: Astroneer does not report online players to the panel. The Players page lists players the server has recorded after their first join.
  • I cannot kick players from the panel: kicking is only possible in game, through the Server Admin menu while connected as the owner.
