How to Upgrade Your Vintage Story Server to a New Version

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to update your Vintage Story server to the latest version from the RiverHosting panel so your players can always join with the newest game release.

Vintage Story releases updates regularly, and your server needs to match the version your players are running. If the versions do not match, players will not be able to connect. The good news is that updating your Vintage Story server through the RiverHosting panel is straightforward and does not require any technical knowledge.

This guide walks you through the full update process, including what to check before you start and what to do if something goes wrong.

    Before you start

    • Make sure you know which version of Vintage Story your players are running. Your server must match that version exactly.
    • Back up your server before updating. Updates can occasionally cause world or configuration issues, and a backup means you can always roll back.
    • Let your players know the server will be going offline briefly during the update.
    • Your server must be stopped before you change the version. If it is running, stop it first from the top of your server page.
    Back up before updating

Always create a backup before changing your server version. If the update causes problems, a backup lets you restore your world and settings quickly.

    1. Back up your server first

Before making any changes, take a backup of your current server files.

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Select your Vintage Story server from the server list.
    3. Click Backups in the left-hand menu.
    4. Click the button to create a new backup and wait for it to complete.
    Backups are quick

Backups usually complete within a minute or two. Do not skip this step, especially before a version change.

    2. Stop your server

Your server must be offline before you update the version.

    1. Go to your server's main page in the panel.
    2. Click the Stop button and wait until the server status shows as stopped.

    3. Update the Vintage Story version

The version is set through the Startup tab in the RiverHosting panel. This is where you can tell the server which version of Vintage Story to run.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Startup.
    2. Look for the version field. It will show the currently installed version of Vintage Story.
    3. Update the value to the version number you want to run. For example, if the latest release is 1.20.0, enter that version number.
    4. Save your changes.
Where to find the latest version

You can check the current Vintage Story release version on the official Vintage Story website. Make sure the version you enter matches what your players have installed.

    4. Start your server and confirm the update

Once the version is set, start your server and check that everything is running correctly.

    1. Click the Start button on your server page.
    2. Open the Console tab in the left-hand menu.
    3. Watch the startup logs. You should see the new version number appear in the output as the server loads.
    4. Once the server is fully online, try connecting from the game to confirm players can join.
    Update complete

If the console shows no errors and players can connect successfully, your Vintage Story server is now running the updated version.

    Troubleshooting

    • Players cannot connect after the update. Check that the version on the server matches exactly what players have installed. A mismatch of even a minor version number will prevent connections.
    • The server crashes immediately on startup. The new version may have changed something that conflicts with your current world or configuration. Try restoring your backup and waiting for a stable release before updating again.
    • The console shows errors about missing files. Stop the server and try starting it again. If the problem continues, contact RiverHosting support for help.
    • Mods are causing issues after the update. Mods sometimes break when the game updates. Check your installed mods using the Mods page in the left-hand menu and remove or update any that are not compatible with the new version.
    • The version field does not save. Make sure the server is stopped before editing Startup settings, then try again.
