How to Change the World Generation Settings on Your Vintage Story Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to customise your Vintage Story world generation settings from the RiverHosting panel so your server starts with exactly the world type and features you want.

Vintage Story gives you a lot of control over how your world is generated before the server starts. You can adjust the world type, land coverage, climate, and other generation options to shape the experience for everyone who plays on your server.

The RiverHosting panel includes a dedicated World Generation page for Vintage Story servers, so you can make these changes without editing any files manually.

    Before you start

    • You need access to your server in the RiverHosting panel.
    • World generation settings only apply when a new world is created. If your server already has an existing world, you will need to reset or replace it before the new settings take effect.
    • Make a backup of your current world before making any changes, especially if players have already been active on the server.
Changes apply to new worlds only

Editing world generation settings does not change an existing world. The new settings will only take effect when a fresh world is generated. If you apply changes without resetting your world, players will continue on the old world as if nothing changed.

    1. How to open the World Generation page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Click on your Vintage Story server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click World Generation.

This page shows all of the available world generation options for your server. You can review the current values and change any of them before your next world is created.

    Stop the server first

It is a good idea to stop your server before editing world generation settings. This avoids any conflicts between a running world and the settings you are applying.

    2. How to change your world generation settings

    1. On the World Generation page, review the available options. These typically include settings such as the world type, land coverage, climate zone, and other generation parameters.
    2. Adjust the options to match the kind of world you want to create. For example, you can choose a more forested environment, change the size and distribution of landmasses, or enable specific world features.
    3. When you are happy with your choices, save your changes using the save button on the page.
    Setting descriptions

If you are unsure what a particular setting does, hover over it or read the label carefully. Most settings have short descriptions that explain what they control. When in doubt, leaving a setting at its default value is always safe.

    3. How to apply the new settings by resetting your world

After saving your world generation settings, you need to make sure a fresh world will be generated so the new settings are actually used.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Worlds and Saves.
    2. From here you can delete the existing world or create a new save slot, depending on how you want to handle the transition.
    3. Once the old world has been removed or a new slot is ready, start your server from the top of the page using the Start button.
    4. Vintage Story will generate a brand new world using the settings you saved on the World Generation page.
    Back up before you delete

Deleting a world is permanent and cannot be undone from within the panel. Before removing any existing save, go to the Backups tab and create a backup so you can restore it later if needed.

    Troubleshooting

    • The world did not change after saving settings. World generation settings only apply when a new world is created. If the old world is still present, the server will continue to load it. Remove or replace the existing world and restart the server.
    • The server is not starting after the world was reset. Check the Console tab for any error messages. A misconfigured generation setting could prevent the server from starting. Review your settings on the World Generation page and correct any obvious mistakes.
    • I cannot find the World Generation page. Make sure you are on a Vintage Story server. This page only appears for Vintage Story servers in the left-hand menu. If you recently switched games using Game Changer, check that the switch completed successfully.
    • Players cannot connect after the world was reset. The server may still be starting up or generating the new world. Give it a minute and then check the Console to confirm the server is fully online before players try to join.
