How to migrate your Terraria server from BisectHosting to RiverHosting
Learn how to move your Terraria world and settings from BisectHosting using the Migrate page in the RiverHosting panel, with no downloads to your computer and less downtime.
Moving your Terraria server from BisectHosting to RiverHosting is quick when you use the Migrate page in the RiverHosting panel. It copies your world and config files straight from BisectHosting, so you do not have to download anything to your own computer first. This guide covers both vanilla Terraria and tModLoader worlds.
Before you start
- A RiverHosting Terraria server. Create it before you migrate so your files go into a matching server. You can manage servers at https://panel.riverhosting.com.
- Your BisectHosting SFTP login details (see their Terraria SFTP article).
- A few minutes where nobody is playing on the old server.
Do not cancel or delete your BisectHosting server until everything works on RiverHosting.
Terraria on RiverHosting runs as Vanilla Terraria, TShock or tModLoader. If you are moving a tModLoader world, make sure your RiverHosting server uses tModLoader. You can check this on the Versions page.
1. Get your connection details from BisectHosting
You need your BisectHosting SFTP details so RiverHosting can connect to your old server. SFTP is a safe way to copy files between servers.
- Log in to the Starbase panel at BisectHosting and open your Terraria server.
- Stop the server before moving any world files. This keeps the world from changing while it is copied.
- Open the Files tab.
- Click SFTP (some BisectHosting guides call it SFTP Credentials) to see the connection details.
- Copy the Hostname and the Port. Keep them separate, because RiverHosting has a separate box for each.
- Copy the login details shown on that same screen. The Migrate page has Username and Password fields for them.
You do not need to launch SFTP or install a program. RiverHosting connects for you.
At BisectHosting, Terraria world files are in the Worlds folder under the Files tab. Vanilla worlds use .wld and .bak files. tModLoader worlds use .twld, .wld and .bak files.
2. Move your files with the Migrate page
- Open https://panel.riverhosting.com and select your RiverHosting Terraria server.
- Stop the RiverHosting server from the Console page by clicking Stop.
- In the SYSTEM section of the sidebar, click Migrate.
- Choose SFTP as the protocol.
- Fill in the fields:
- Host: the Hostname from BisectHosting.
- Port: the Port from BisectHosting.
- Username: the username from the BisectHosting SFTP screen. Check it is copied exactly.
- Password: the password from the BisectHosting SFTP screen. Check it is copied exactly.
- Remote Path: the folder on BisectHosting that holds your server files, including the Worlds folder.
- Destination Path: where the files should land on RiverHosting. Use the main server folder.
- Click Test Connection. If it succeeds, you are ready to go on.

If the page offers Switch to Terraria, it goes through Game Changer, which wipes all files on your RiverHosting server and reinstalls it. A backup is taken automatically first. Do this before you start the migration, never after. If your server already runs Terraria, choose Migrate Anyway.
- Click Start Migration.
- Watch Migration Status. It shows the progress and the file currently being copied.
- Wait until the migration finishes.
Files with the same name on RiverHosting are overwritten by the files from BisectHosting. If you already have a world you care about on RiverHosting, make a backup first on the Backups page.
If you click Cancel Migration, files that were already copied stay on your server.

3. Make sure the right world loads
Your server needs to know which world to open. The world name in the config must match the world you moved.
- Open the Worlds page in the GAME section of the sidebar.
- Look at the list and find your moved world and its name.
- Click Activate this World next to it, then confirm Activate & Restart. This restarts the server right away.
- If your config file still points to an old world name, open Files, find the config file and click Edit File. Change the world name so it matches the moved world exactly, then save.
- Go to Console and click Start, or Restart if the server is already running.
World names must match exactly, including capital letters and spaces.
4. Check everything and tell your players
- Open the Console and wait for the server to finish starting. Look for any red ERROR lines.
- Copy the address shown at the top of the Console page. Your RiverHosting address is different from your BisectHosting one.
- Join the server in Terraria and check that your world, buildings and progress are there.
- Share the new address with your players. You can also set up an easy to remember name on the Subdomain page.
Players need tModLoader installed on their own PC with the same mods enabled to join a modded server. You can manage mods on the Mods page.
Once everyone can join and the world looks right, your move to RiverHosting is complete. Keep the BisectHosting server until you are sure.
Troubleshooting
- Test Connection fails: check that the Host, Port, Username, Password and protocol match what BisectHosting shows. Make sure the Hostname and Port are in their own separate boxes. If it still fails, contact RiverHosting support.
- The migration finished but the world is missing: open the Worlds page and look for it in the list. If it is not there, check that Remote Path pointed to the folder holding your server files.
- The server starts with a brand new world: the world name in the config does not match your moved world. Activate the right world on the Worlds page or fix the name in the config.
- Mods are missing (tModLoader): open the Mods page, check that the mods are enabled, then restart the server.
- The page says Game Not Recognized: use the request form on that page or contact support.
- Something went wrong with a world: you can restore a backup from the Backups page.
