How to Change the Difficulty on Your Stationeers Server
Learn how to change the difficulty on your Stationeers server using the RiverHosting panel so you can tune the survival challenge exactly the way you and your crew want it.
Stationeers is a demanding survival game where difficulty settings shape how punishing the experience feels, from oxygen and pressure management to how quickly things go wrong. Whether you want a more relaxed engineering sandbox or a brutal challenge, you can adjust the difficulty settings for your server directly from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files by hand.
Before you start
- Make sure you have an active Stationeers server with RiverHosting. You can manage it at panel.riverhosting.com.
- You will need to restart your server after making changes for them to take effect.
- Difficulty changes apply to the world going forward. Some settings may affect newly loaded areas of the world more noticeably than already-explored areas.
Before changing difficulty settings, make a backup of your server from the Backups page. This gives you a safe restore point if anything does not behave as expected after the change.
1. How to change the difficulty on your Stationeers server
The easiest way to adjust difficulty on your Stationeers server is through the built-in Server Config page in the RiverHosting panel. This page gives you a clean editor for the most important server settings, so you do not need to locate or edit configuration files manually.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Click on your Stationeers server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- Look for the difficulty-related settings on this page. These typically control things like how demanding the survival environment is and whether certain gameplay challenges are active.
- Adjust the settings to your preference.
- Click the Save button to apply your changes.
- Go back to the main server page and click Restart so the new settings load properly.
A lower difficulty is great for new players who want to focus on building and engineering without constant survival pressure. A higher difficulty is better for experienced crews who want a real challenge.
2. How to verify the difficulty change in the console
After your server restarts, you can quickly confirm that the new settings are active by checking the console output.
- In the left-hand menu, click Console.
- Watch the startup messages as the server loads. The server will log its active configuration during startup, and you should be able to see references to the settings you changed.
- If the values shown in the console match what you set in Server Config, the change was applied correctly.
The console shows live server output. During startup you cannot send commands, but you can read the log to confirm settings are loading as expected.
Troubleshooting
- Changes do not seem to take effect: Make sure you clicked Save in the Server Config page before restarting. If you closed the page without saving, the change will not be written.
- Server will not start after changing settings: Go to Backups and restore your most recent backup to return to a working state. Then try adjusting only one setting at a time.
- Difficulty feels the same after the change: Some difficulty-related settings in Stationeers affect new game sessions or newly generated world areas more than existing ones. If you are continuing an existing world, the full effect may only be visible in new areas you explore.
- Server Config page looks different or a setting is missing: The available options depend on your server version. If a setting you expect is not there, check the File Manager for the server configuration file and look for it there as a fallback.
