How to Manage Worlds and Saves on Your Space Engineers Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to manage your worlds and save files on your Space Engineers server using the RiverHosting panel so your progress stays safe and organised.

Space Engineers stores your entire game world, including every ship, station, and structure your players have built, inside save files on the server. Knowing how to manage those saves from the RiverHosting panel means you can keep your world tidy, swap to a fresh save when you want a new start, and make sure nothing important gets lost.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Space Engineers server on RiverHosting. Log in at panel.riverhosting.com to reach your server.
    • Stop your server before swapping active saves or deleting files. Making changes while the server is running can cause data loss or corruption.
    • It is a good idea to take a backup before making any changes to your saves. Head to the Backups tab first if you want a safety copy.
    Stop your server first

Always stop your Space Engineers server before swapping worlds or deleting save files. Changes made while the server is running can corrupt your world data.

    1. How to open the Worlds and Saves page

The Worlds and Saves page is the central place in the RiverHosting panel where you manage your Space Engineers save files.

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Click on your Space Engineers server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Worlds & Saves.

This page shows your current save files and gives you the tools to manage them.

    2. How to view and switch your active save

Your server loads one save at a time. You can change which save is loaded from the Worlds & Saves page.

    1. Go to Worlds & Saves in the left-hand menu.
    2. You will see the list of saves available on your server.
    3. Find the save you want to make active and select it.
    4. Confirm the change.
    5. Start your server. It will now load the save you selected.
Keep a record of your save names

Give your saves descriptive names so you can tell them apart easily. If you have multiple worlds, a clear name like "Survival March" is much easier to identify than a default generated name.

    3. How to download a save file

You can download a copy of your save file to keep a local backup on your own computer.

    1. Stop your server if it is currently running.
    2. Open the File Manager from the left-hand menu.
    3. Navigate to the folder where your Space Engineers saves are stored. This is typically inside the Saves or instance directory, depending on how your server is set up.
    4. Locate the save folder you want to download.
    5. Select the folder or the files inside it, then use the download option to save them to your computer.
Use the Backups tab for full server snapshots

If you want a complete snapshot of everything on your server, not just one save, use the Backups tab instead. It captures your entire server at once and lets you restore it with a single click.

    4. How to upload a save file

If you have a save from a previous server or a local game, you can upload it and run it on your RiverHosting Space Engineers server.

    1. Stop your server.
    2. Open the File Manager from the left-hand menu.
    3. Navigate to the saves directory on your server.
    4. Upload your save folder using the upload button in the File Manager.
    5. Once the upload is complete, go to Worlds & Saves and select your uploaded save as the active world.
    6. Start your server.
    Match your save version

Make sure the save you are uploading was created with the same version of Space Engineers that your server is running. Loading a save from a much newer or older version of the game can cause errors or prevent the server from starting.

    5. How to delete an old save

If you have save files you no longer need, you can remove them to keep things tidy.

    1. Stop your server.
    2. Open the File Manager from the left-hand menu.
    3. Navigate to the saves directory.
    4. Find the save folder you want to remove.
    5. Select it and use the delete option.
    Deletion is permanent

Deleted save files cannot be recovered from the File Manager. If there is any chance you might want a save in the future, download it to your computer or create a Backup before deleting it.

    Troubleshooting

    • My server crashes on startup after switching saves. This usually means the save is from an incompatible game version or the save files were not uploaded correctly. Try re-uploading the save and make sure your server is running the right version of Space Engineers.
    • My save is not showing up on the Worlds and Saves page. The save folder may not have been uploaded to the correct directory. Open the File Manager and confirm the save folder is in the right location.
    • Progress was lost after a restart. Make sure auto-save is enabled in your server settings. You can also check the Server Config page for save interval options. Taking regular backups from the Backups tab will protect against this as well.
    • I cannot find the saves directory in the File Manager. Space Engineers stores save data in a specific folder path inside your server files. If you are unsure which folder to look in, contact RiverHosting support and the team can point you to the right location.
