How to Enable and Configure a Password on Your Space Engineers Server

    2 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to set a password on your Space Engineers server using the RiverHosting panel so only invited players can join your game.

By default, your Space Engineers server is open to anyone who finds it in the server browser. If you want to keep your game private and only let trusted players in, you can set a password directly from the RiverHosting panel. Once a password is set, players will be prompted to enter it before they can join.

    Before you start

    • Make sure you have access to your server at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • You will need to restart your server after saving the password for the change to take effect.
    • Share the password only with players you want to invite. Anyone with the password can join.
    Save before restarting

If you close or navigate away from the page without saving, your changes will be lost. Always click the save button before restarting.

    1. How to set a password on your Space Engineers server

The easiest way to set a server password is through the Server Config page in the RiverHosting panel. This page gives you a simple form to update common server settings without needing to edit any files manually.

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Select your Space Engineers server from the list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
    4. Look for the password field. It may be labelled Server Password or similar.
    5. Type the password you want players to use when joining.
    6. Click the save button to apply your changes.
    7. Go back to the main server page and click Restart so the new password takes effect.
    Choose a strong password

Use a password that is easy to share with friends but not something obvious like your server name. Avoid spaces if possible, as some game clients handle them differently.

    2. How to remove or change the password

If you want to open your server to the public again, or update the password, follow the same steps above. To remove the password entirely, clear the password field so it is blank and save. Then restart your server as before.

    1. Go to Server Config in the left-hand menu.
    2. Find the password field and either update the value or clear it completely.
    3. Save your changes.
    4. Restart the server from the main server page.
    Public servers

Leaving the password field empty makes your server publicly joinable by anyone. Only do this if you intend for the server to be open to all players.

    Troubleshooting

    • Players still get in without a password: The server may not have been restarted after saving. Restart it and ask the player to try again.
    • Players cannot join even with the correct password: Check that the password was saved correctly by returning to Server Config and confirming the value shown. Also check that the player is entering it exactly as set, including any capitalisation.
    • The password field is not visible: Make sure you are on the Server Config page and not a different settings area. If the field does not appear, try refreshing the page. If the issue continues, contact support.
    • Changes do not seem to apply: Confirm you clicked save before restarting. If the problem persists, check the Console tab for any error messages after startup.
