How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your Space Engineers Server

    2 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to change the maximum number of players on your Space Engineers server from the RiverHosting panel so your sessions are always the right size for your group.

The maximum player slot count controls how many players can be connected to your Space Engineers server at the same time. Whether you want a tight private session with a few friends or a larger open server, you can change this number at any time from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files manually.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Space Engineers server with RiverHosting. You can manage it at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • Your server will need to restart for the change to take effect, so let any connected players know before you begin.
    • The maximum number of slots available to you depends on the plan you have purchased. If you need more slots than your current plan allows, you can upgrade from the billing portal.
    Restart required

Changing the max player count requires a server restart. Players already connected will be disconnected when the server goes down.

    1. How to change the max player slot count

The easiest way to change your player limit is through the Server Config page, which gives you a simple editor for the most common Space Engineers server settings.

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Click on your Space Engineers server to open its management page.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
    4. Find the setting for the maximum number of players. It is usually labelled something like Max Players or Max Player Count.
    5. Update the value to the number of slots you want.
    6. Save your changes using the save button on the page.
    7. Restart your server from the Console or the main server page so the new limit takes effect.
    Choosing the right number

For a smooth experience, keep your slot count realistic for your hardware plan. A large number of players all active in the same area can put more load on the server. Start with a reasonable number and increase it if performance holds up well.

    2. How to confirm the change worked

After the server restarts, you can quickly confirm that the new slot count is active.

    1. Open the Console from the left-hand menu.
    2. Watch the startup messages as the server loads. You should see a line that confirms the player limit that has been applied.
    3. You can also check by attempting to connect with more players than the previous limit allowed. Players should now be able to join up to the new maximum.
    Session settings in-game

Space Engineers also has some session-level settings that can affect multiplayer capacity. If you are not seeing the expected results, check that your in-game session settings are not overriding the server config. The Server Config page in the panel is the recommended place to manage this.

    Troubleshooting

    • The setting does not appear in Server Config. Make sure your server is fully set up and has been started at least once. Some settings only appear after the first startup initialises the configuration.
    • Players still cannot join after the change. Double-check that you saved the change and then restarted the server. Changes do not apply until after a full restart.
    • The new limit is lower than expected. Your plan may have a maximum slot limit. If you need a higher number, visit the billing portal to review upgrade options.
    • Performance drops with more players. A higher player count puts more load on the server. If you notice lag or slowdowns, consider reducing the slot count or upgrading your plan for more resources.
    • The server crashes on startup after the change. An invalid value in the config can sometimes cause startup issues. Go back to Server Config and check that the player count is set to a valid whole number.
