How to Connect to Your SCUM Server
Learn how to find your SCUM server's connection details in the RiverHosting panel and get yourself and your friends into the game quickly.
Once your SCUM server is up and running, the next step is actually getting into it. This guide walks you through finding your server's connection details in the RiverHosting panel and joining the game, whether you are playing solo or inviting friends.
Before you start
- Make sure your SCUM server is running. You can check this from the Console tab in the RiverHosting panel. The status indicator at the top of the page will show green when the server is online.
- Make sure you have SCUM installed on your PC through Steam.
- If you set a server password, have it ready before you try to connect.
After starting your server, wait about 60 to 90 seconds before trying to connect. SCUM needs time to fully load before it accepts incoming connections.
1. Find your server's connection details
Your server's IP address and game port are shown on the Network page in the panel. Here is how to find them:
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Click on your SCUM server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Network.
- You will see your server's IP address and game port listed here. Make a note of both, or copy them to your clipboard.
Your connection address will look something like 123.45.67.89:28000, where the number after the colon is your game port. The exact port number may vary depending on your server setup.
2. Connect to your SCUM server in-game
SCUM lets you connect directly to a server using its IP address and port. Follow these steps:
- Open Steam and launch SCUM.
- From the main menu, click Play.
- Select the Community Servers tab, or look for a Direct Connect or Add Server option.
- Enter your server's IP address and port in the format
123.45.67.89:28000, using the details you copied from the Network page. - Click Connect (or Join).
- If your server has a password, you will be prompted to enter it before joining.
After connecting successfully, you can add the server to your favourites list inside SCUM so you do not have to type the address every time.
3. Share your server address with friends
To invite friends, simply share the IP address and port you found on the Network page. They can follow the same steps above to join.
If you want to give your friends an easier address to remember, you can set up a custom subdomain instead. Head to Subdomain Manager in the left-hand menu and choose a name from one of the available base domains, such as survival.playriver.net or myserver.playriver.xyz. Once set up, friends can use that address to connect instead of the raw IP.
The Subdomain Manager is available on every server in the RiverHosting panel. You can find it in the left-hand menu. Choose a name and one of the available base domains to create a memorable address for your server.
4. Troubleshoot connection issues
If you or a friend cannot connect, work through these common causes:
- Server is not running. Check the Console tab in the panel to confirm the server is online. If it is stopped or crashed, use the Start button to bring it back up.
- Wrong IP or port. Double-check the details on the Network page. Make sure you are using the correct port and not leaving any spaces in the address.
- Server password. If your server has a password configured in the SCUM Server Config page, you must enter it when prompted. Share the password with anyone you want to invite.
- Server is still loading. If you just started the server, wait a minute or two and try again. SCUM can take a little time to become joinable after startup.
- SCUM is not up to date. Make sure your SCUM client on Steam is fully updated. A version mismatch between your client and the server can prevent you from joining.
- Firewall or router. If you are hosting for friends and they cannot connect, the issue is usually on the server side rather than your network. RiverHosting handles port access for you, so this is rarely an issue with managed servers.
