How to Change the Game Mode on Your Satisfactory Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to change the game mode on your Satisfactory server from the RiverHosting panel so you and your friends can play the way you want from the start.

Satisfactory lets you choose between a standard online session and a creative-style experience. If you want to change how your server runs, such as switching between normal and creative play, you can do this quickly from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files by hand.

This guide walks you through finding and updating the game mode setting on your Satisfactory server.

    Before you start

    • Make sure you have an active Satisfactory server with RiverHosting.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • Your server should be stopped before making changes to avoid any conflicts. You can stop it from the main server page by clicking the Stop button.
    Stop your server first

Changing game mode settings while the server is running can cause unexpected behaviour. Stop the server before making changes, then start it again once you are done.

    1. Open your Satisfactory server settings

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Click on your Satisfactory server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Startup.
    4. The Startup page shows the launch variables your server uses when it starts. This is where you can adjust settings that control how the game runs, including options related to game mode.
    Why Startup?

Satisfactory does not have a separate Settings page in the panel, so game mode and other core server options are managed through the Startup variables. This is the correct and supported place to make these changes.

    2. Find and update the game mode variable

    1. On the Startup page, look through the list of variables for any option related to game mode or game type.
    2. Click the field next to the relevant variable to edit it.
    3. Enter the value that matches the mode you want to use. Common options in Satisfactory are 0 for the standard online game mode.
    4. If you want to use a creative or custom mode, check the available values listed in the variable description on that page and enter the correct one.
    5. Once you have entered the value you want, click Save or press Enter to confirm the change.
    Check the variable description

Each Startup variable on the panel usually includes a short description of what it does and what values are accepted. Read this before changing anything so you pick the right option.

    3. Restart your server to apply the change

    1. After saving your changes on the Startup page, go back to the main server page.
    2. Click Start to start your server.
    3. Watch the Console tab as the server starts up. You should see it load with the new settings applied.
    4. Once the server is online, connect from Satisfactory and verify that the game mode is working as expected.
    All done

Your Satisfactory server is now running with the updated game mode. Your players will experience the new settings as soon as they join.

    Troubleshooting

    • The server is not starting after the change: Go back to the Startup page and double-check the value you entered. An invalid value can prevent the server from launching. Correct the value and try starting the server again.
    • The game mode does not seem to have changed in-game: Make sure you stopped the server fully before saving the change, and that you clicked Start after saving. A full restart is required for Startup variables to take effect.
    • You cannot find a game mode variable on the Startup page: Not all Satisfactory server builds expose every variable. If the option is not listed, you may need to add the relevant launch argument manually through the Startup command field. Contact support if you are unsure how to do this safely.
    • The Console shows an error after starting: Copy the error message and open a support ticket at riverhosting.com/support so the team can help you identify the cause.
