How to Change the Cluster Token on Your Don't Starve Together Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to update your Don't Starve Together cluster token from the RiverHosting panel so your server stays authenticated and your players can keep connecting without interruption.

Your Don't Starve Together server uses a cluster token to prove to Klei's servers that it is a legitimate, authorised server. Without a valid token, your server will not appear online and players will not be able to connect. If your token has expired, you have regenerated it from your Klei account, or you are setting up your server for the first time, you will need to enter the correct token through the RiverHosting panel.

This guide walks you through finding your cluster token in your Klei account and then entering it in the panel so your server runs without any authentication errors.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Don't Starve Together server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, you can order one at riverhosting.com.
    • You need a Klei account. This is the same account you use to log in to the game on Steam. If you do not have one, you can create one for free at accounts.klei.com.
    • Your server must be stopped before you apply the new token. Changing the token while the server is running may cause it to ignore the update until the next restart.
    Stop your server first

Always stop your server before changing the cluster token. Start it again once you have saved the new value.

    1. Generate your cluster token from Klei

Before you can enter a token in the panel, you need to get one from your Klei account. Follow these steps:

    1. Open your browser and go to accounts.klei.com.
    2. Sign in with the Klei account that owns your copy of Don't Starve Together.
    3. On the server management page, click Add New Server.
    4. Give the server entry a name so you can identify it later. This name is just a label for your Klei account and does not affect your in-game server name.
    5. Click Generate Token. A long string of characters will appear. This is your cluster token.
    6. Copy the entire token to your clipboard. Do not share it with anyone, as it is tied to your Klei account.
    Keep a backup copy

Paste your cluster token into a text file and save it somewhere safe. If you ever need to re-enter it, having it saved means you will not need to generate a new one.

    2. Enter the cluster token in the RiverHosting panel

Once you have your token, log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Don't Starve Together server. Then follow these steps:

    1. Log in to the panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Select your Don't Starve Together server from your server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Cluster Token. This is the dedicated page for managing your server's authentication token.
    4. Paste your cluster token into the token field. Make sure you paste the full token with no extra spaces at the beginning or end.
    5. Click Save to apply the token.
    Paste the full token

The token is a long string. Make sure you copy and paste all of it. If even a few characters are missing, the server will fail to authenticate and will not come online properly.

    3. Start your server and confirm it is working

After saving the token, start your server and check that it comes online correctly.

    1. Go back to the main server page by clicking Console in the left-hand menu.
    2. Click the Start button to start your server.
    3. Watch the console output as the server starts. You should see messages indicating that the server is connecting to Klei's services and that authentication was successful.
    4. Once the server is fully online, open Don't Starve Together in your Steam library and browse the server list to confirm your server appears, or connect directly using your server's IP and port from the Network page in the panel.
    You are all set

If the server appears in the server browser or you can connect directly, your cluster token is working correctly.

    Troubleshooting

    • The server starts but does not appear online: Double-check that you pasted the full token with no missing characters. A partial token will cause authentication to fail silently.
    • The console shows an authentication error: Return to your Klei account, generate a fresh token, and repeat step 2. Old tokens can sometimes become invalid if you generate a new one for the same server entry.
    • The Cluster Token page is not visible in the menu: Make sure you are viewing a Don't Starve Together server. The Cluster Token page is specific to this game. If you cannot see it, contact RiverHosting support.
    • The server crashes immediately after starting: Check the console output for error messages. Authentication issues will usually appear near the top of the startup log. You may also want to confirm your Klei account still has an active Don't Starve Together licence.
    • Players cannot find the server in the browser: The server may need a minute or two to register. Wait a short time and refresh the server list. You can also share your direct IP and port from the Network page so players can connect without the browser.
