How to migrate your Rust server from Shockbyte to RiverHosting
Learn how to move your Rust server from Shockbyte with the RiverHosting Migrate page, which imports your files over SFTP so you do not have to upload them yourself.
Moving your Rust server from Shockbyte to RiverHosting is quicker than it sounds. You give the RiverHosting Migrate page your Shockbyte SFTP login details, and it imports your files from Shockbyte over SFTP, so you don't need to upload them yourself.
This guide shows you how to find your login details at Shockbyte, fill in the Migrate page, and fix the most common connection problems.
Before you start
- A RiverHosting server created for Rust. Create it before you migrate so your files go into a matching server.
- Your Shockbyte SFTP login details. At Shockbyte they are on Files > SFTP Connect in the server control panel (the SFTP Server Login page).
- Your Shockbyte SFTP password. It is the same as your Shockbyte server control panel password.
- Access to the RiverHosting panel at https://panel.riverhosting.com.
Stop your Rust server at Shockbyte before you migrate. This helps make sure the files are not changing while they are copied, so you get the latest save.
Keep your Shockbyte server until everything works on RiverHosting. That way you always have a copy to go back to.
1. Get your connection details from Shockbyte
Shockbyte shows your SFTP login details in its server control panel. You can read more in Shockbyte's help article.
- Log in to your Shockbyte server control panel.
- Go to Files and then SFTP Connect. This opens the SFTP Server Login page.
- Note the connection details shown there, including your Host, Port and Username.
- Have your Password ready. It is the same as your Shockbyte control panel password.
The username is different for each server and ends with a set of numbers. Those numbers must be entered exactly as shown.
Do not add spaces before or after the username or password. Copy and paste can add them by accident, so typing the details by hand can help.
If you do not know your password, you can reset your Shockbyte control panel password using Shockbyte's password reset guide.
2. How to migrate your files with the Migrate page
- Open the RiverHosting panel and select your new Rust server.
- In the sidebar, under SYSTEM, click Migrate.
- Choose SFTP as the protocol.
- Fill in the fields:
- Host: the host from the Shockbyte SFTP Connect page.
- Port: the port from the same page.
- Username: your Shockbyte SFTP username, with the numbers at the end.
- Password: your Shockbyte control panel password.
- Remote Path: the folder on Shockbyte that holds your Rust server files.
- Destination Path: where the files should go on your RiverHosting server.
- Click Test Connection and wait for the result.
- If the panel offers Switch to Rust or Migrate Anyway, read the next section before you continue.
- Click Start Migration.
- Watch Migration Status. It shows the progress and the file currently being copied.

If a file on RiverHosting has the same name as a file coming from Shockbyte, it is overwritten. If you cancel with Cancel Migration, the files already copied stay on your server.
3. What to do if the panel detects your game
Sometimes the Migrate page detects which game is on the old server and shows an offer.
- Migrate Anyway: choose this if your RiverHosting server already runs Rust. This is the normal choice if you created a Rust server first.
- Switch to Rust: this goes through Game Changer.
Switching with Game Changer wipes all files on your RiverHosting server and reinstalls it. RiverHosting tries to take a backup automatically before the switch, but this needs a free backup slot. If all your slots are full, you will be asked to pick a backup to overwrite (Overwrite & Switch) or to skip the backup (Switch Without Backup). Read that prompt carefully. Always do this before you click Start Migration, never after, or your migrated files would be erased.
If you see "Game Not Recognized", you can use the request form shown on the page.
4. Check your Rust server after the move
- When Migration Status shows the migration is finished, open Files and check that your server files are there.
- Go to Console and click Start.
- Watch the console for errors while the server starts.
- Copy the IP and port from the chip at the top of the panel, then join using the F1 console in Rust with
client.connect ip:port.
Once your server starts and you can join, your Shockbyte move is done. You can now decide what to do with the old server.
Troubleshooting
- Test Connection fails: check that the Host and Port match the Shockbyte SFTP Connect page exactly.
- Login problems: check that the username and password are copied exactly, including the numbers at the end of the username. Make sure there are no spaces before or after either one. Typing them by hand can help.
- Not sure of the password: it is the same as your Shockbyte control panel password. If it is unknown, reset it using Shockbyte's password reset guide, then try again. See also this Shockbyte article on login failures.
- Wrong or missing files: check the Remote Path and Destination Path, then run the migration again. Files with the same name are overwritten.
If the connection test keeps failing, there is a manual fallback. You can download your files from Shockbyte with an SFTP program, then upload them on the Files page in the RiverHosting panel.
