How to Change the Difficulty on Your Palworld Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to adjust the difficulty on your Palworld server using the RiverHosting panel so you can fine-tune the challenge level for you and your players.

Palworld lets you tune how tough or relaxed your survival experience feels. Whether you want a brutal challenge where death has real consequences or a laid-back session focused on building and catching Pals, you can adjust the difficulty settings directly from the RiverHosting panel without touching any files manually.

    Before you start

    • Make sure you have an active Palworld server with RiverHosting.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • You will need to restart your server after making changes for them to take effect.
    • Players currently connected will be disconnected during the restart, so choose a quiet time if your server is active.
    Save your progress first

Restart your server at a safe moment. Ask any connected players to save and log off before you apply changes.

    1. Open the Server Config page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Click on your Palworld server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.

The Server Config page is a built-in editor for your Palworld server's settings. It lets you change common options from a single screen instead of editing configuration files by hand.

    No file editing needed

The Server Config page handles all of this for you. You do not need to open the File Manager or edit any config files directly to change difficulty settings.

    2. Adjust the difficulty settings

The Server Config page contains a range of gameplay options. Look for the difficulty-related settings, which typically control things like:

    • Damage multipliers for players and enemies
    • Pal capture rates
    • Player death penalties and item drops
    • Pal stamina and hunger rates
    • Experience gain rates
    • Building damage and decay settings

Work through the settings you want to change. Each field shows the current value, and you can update it directly on the page.

    What do the numbers mean?

Most multiplier settings use a decimal value. A value of 1.0 is the default. Values above 1.0 increase the effect (for example higher damage), and values below 1.0 reduce it (for example easier combat). Start with small adjustments if you are unsure. ::: :::example[Example adjustments] If you want an easier experience, try lowering the enemy damage multiplier and increasing the Pal capture rate. For a harder challenge, raise the death penalty and reduce experience gain.

    1. Find the setting you want to change.
    2. Update the value in the field.
    3. Repeat for any other settings you want to adjust.
    4. When you are done, click Save to apply your changes.

    3. Restart your server to apply the changes

Saving the settings does not automatically reload them on a live server. You need to restart your server for the new difficulty values to take effect.

    1. Go back to your server's main page.
    2. Click the Restart button at the top of the page.
    3. Wait for the server to come back online. This usually takes about a minute.
    4. Reconnect and verify that the new settings are working as expected.
    Changes applied

Once the server is back online, your new difficulty settings are active. Players who join will experience the updated values straight away.

    Troubleshooting

    • Settings do not seem to have changed in-game. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If you closed the page without saving, your changes were not stored.
    • The server is not coming back online after the restart. Wait up to two minutes, then check the Console tab in the left-hand menu for any error messages. If the server fails to start, the Console will usually show what went wrong.
    • You cannot find a specific setting on the Server Config page. Some advanced settings may not appear in the panel editor. If a setting is missing, you can look for it in the File Manager under your server's configuration files. Only edit files manually if the Server Config page does not include the option you need.
    • Changes reset after a restart. This can happen if the server is overwriting the config file on startup. If this occurs, contact RiverHosting support for help with your specific setup.
