How to Manage Admins and Bans on Your Icarus Server
Learn how to use the Whitelist / Bans page in the RiverHosting panel to add trusted admins and ban troublemakers on your Icarus server, so you stay in control of every session.
Every Icarus server needs a way to keep order. The Whitelist / Bans page in the RiverHosting panel lets you give trusted friends admin powers and block players who cause problems, without typing anything into a config file.
This guide shows you how to add an admin, ban and unban a player, and make the changes take effect.
Before you start
- You need access to your server in the RiverHosting panel.
- You need the player's SteamID64. This is a 17 digit number that identifies their Steam account. Ask the player to send it to you.
- Icarus has no Players page in the panel, so the Whitelist / Bans page is where you manage who has admin rights and who is banned.
The Admin Whitelist does not control who can join your server. It only decides who gets admin commands. To keep strangers out, use a join password and the Ban List.
1. How to add a player to the Admin Whitelist
Whitelisted players can use admin commands such as kick, return to lobby and the prospect selector without typing the admin password.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Icarus server.
- In the left-hand menu, under the Icarus group in the GAME section, click Whitelist / Bans.
- In the Admin Whitelist box, enter the player's 17 digit SteamID64.
- Click Add. The ID appears in the list.
- Restart your server so the change is read (see section 4).
To remove someone later, click the trash icon next to their ID and restart the server again.
Whitelisting a player also disables the Delete button on the in-game prospect load screen, which helps protect your saves from accidents.
2. How to ban a player
- Open Whitelist / Bans from the left-hand menu.
- In the Ban List section, enter the player's SteamID. This is the only required field.
- Optionally fill in Player name and Reason. These are handy reminders for you and your other admins later.
- Click Ban.
- Restart your server so the ban is applied (see section 4).
Writing a short reason, like "griefing the base", makes it much easier to decide later whether to unban someone.
3. How to unban a player
- Open Whitelist / Bans.
- Find the player in the Ban List.
- Click the trash icon next to their entry to unban them.
- Restart your server.
An unbanned player cannot rejoin until after the server has restarted.
4. How to apply your changes with a restart
Icarus only reads the Admin Whitelist and Ban List while the server boots. After you add, remove, ban or unban anyone, a restart prompt appears in the panel.
- Click the restart prompt, or open Console and click Restart. On other pages you can also open the Quick Console (the
>_tab on the right edge of the screen) and use Restart there. - Wait for the status badge in the server header to show ONLINE.
A restart disconnects everyone currently playing. Let your players know first, and try to restart between prospects or at a quiet time.
5. Using admin commands in game
Once the server is back online, admins can moderate from the in-game chat.
- Whitelisted players can use admin commands right away.
- Other players can type
/AdminLoginfollowed by the admin password to become admin for that session. You set the Admin Password on the Server Config page, while the server is stopped. - Admins can use
/KickPlayer,/BanPlayerand/UnbanPlayerin chat, along with/ReturnToLobby.
A blank admin password does not turn admin off. Anyone who types /AdminLogin becomes an admin. Set a strong Admin Password on the Server Config page.
Troubleshooting
- A banned player can still join: The Ban List is only read at boot. Restart the server and check the player's SteamID is correct.
- An unbanned player still cannot join: Restart the server. The unban only takes effect after a restart.
- A whitelisted player does not get admin commands: Check the SteamID64 has exactly 17 digits and belongs to the right Steam account, then restart the server.
- I cannot find a Players page: Icarus does not have one in the panel. Use Whitelist / Bans, or the in-game admin commands.
- I want to allow only certain people to join: The Admin Whitelist cannot do this. Use a join password on the Server Config page and the Ban List.
