How to Install Steam Workshop Mods on Your Squad Server

3 min read·Updated Nov 3, 2026

Learn how to add Steam Workshop mods to your Squad server by ID from the RiverHosting panel, then check they downloaded so your players can join without problems.

Mods can add new maps, layers, factions and other content to your Squad server. In the RiverHosting panel you add them from the Mods page by typing the mod's Steam Workshop ID, and the panel checks that each mod actually downloaded. This guide walks you through adding, checking and removing mods.

Before you start

  • You need access to your server in the RiverHosting panel at https://panel.riverhosting.com.
  • You need the numeric Steam Workshop item ID of each mod you want. The panel has no search, so you add mods by ID only. The ID is the number in the web address of the mod's Steam Workshop page.
  • Squad mods come from the Steam Workshop. Players need the same mods as the server to join.
  • Adding a mod does not start the download by itself. The server needs a restart before the mod downloads and loads.
Players need the same mods

Anyone who joins a modded server must have the same mods installed. Tell your community which Workshop mods you use before they try to connect.

1. How to add a Workshop mod

  1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Squad server.
  2. In the left-hand menu, under the Squad group, click Mods. The page is titled Workshop Mods.
  3. Under Add Mod, type the numeric Steam Workshop item ID into the field.
  4. Click Add.

The mod now appears in the Installed Mods list with its Workshop ID. The ID is a link, so you can click it to open the mod's page on Steam.

Need to find mods?

Click the Browse the Squad Workshop link on the Mods page to look through the Squad Workshop on Steam. Copy the ID of any mod you like, then come back and add it.

2. How to download the mod and check it worked

A newly added mod shows the status Pending download. It does not load until it has been downloaded.

  1. Go to Console in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click Restart (or Start if the server is offline). The mod files are downloaded into the SquadGame/Plugins/Mods/ folder.
  3. Wait for the server to finish starting. The first start after adding mods can take longer than usual.
  4. Go back to Mods and look at the Installed Mods list.
  5. Check that each mod now shows Downloaded.
Mod ready

When a mod shows Downloaded, its files are on your server and it will load the next time the server runs.

Mods that were uploaded by hand through the Files page show Uploaded manually (not in the download list). That is normal. They are not managed by the Add Mod list.

Do not use Reinstall to download mods

Settings has a Reinstall Server option, but it deletes all files and resets the server. Use a restart to download mods instead.

3. How to remove a mod

  1. Open Mods in the left-hand menu.
  2. Find the mod in the Installed Mods list.
  3. Click the remove button next to it.
  4. Go to Console and click Restart so the change fully applies.
Removing deletes the files

Removing a mod deletes its downloaded folder from your server. If you want it back later, you will need to add it again and let it download again.

Troubleshooting

  • The mod still says Pending download: Restart the server from the Console page and wait until it has fully started, then refresh the Mods page.
  • The mod does not load in game: It only loads once the status is Downloaded. Check the Mods page, then restart if needed.
  • Players cannot join the server: Make sure they have the same mods as the server. A mismatch stops them from connecting.
  • You cannot find a mod in the panel: The panel has no Workshop search. Use the Browse the Squad Workshop link, copy the ID, and add it with Add.
  • The Add button does not accept the ID: The field expects only the numeric Workshop item ID, with no extra text or web address.
  • You removed a mod but it still seems active: Restart the server so the removal fully applies.
