How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your Icarus Server

    2 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to change the maximum number of players allowed on your Icarus server using the RiverHosting panel so your sessions are the right size for your group.

By default, your Icarus server comes set up with a player limit that may not match the size of your group. Whether you want a private session for just a few friends or a larger open server, you can change the maximum player count directly from the RiverHosting panel without touching any files manually.

This guide walks you through finding the right setting and applying the change so your server accepts exactly the number of players you want.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Icarus server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
    • Make sure you are logged in to the RiverHosting panel.
    • Your server should be stopped or restarted after making this change so the new limit takes effect properly.
    Less is more for performance

Running fewer player slots than your plan's maximum can help keep your server performing well, especially during resource-heavy exploration sessions.

    1. Open your Icarus server in the panel

    1. Go to panel.riverhosting.com and log in to your account.
    2. Find your Icarus server in the server list and click on it to open its management page.

    2. Go to the Server Config page

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
    2. This page contains the most common settings for your Icarus server, including the player slot limit.
    No file editing needed

The Server Config page gives you a simple form to change settings. You do not need to edit any configuration files directly.

    3. Change the max player slot count

    1. On the Server Config page, look for the setting that controls the maximum number of players. It is typically labelled something like Max Players or Player Slots.
    2. Update the value to the number of players you want to allow on your server at the same time.
    3. Once you have entered the new number, click the Save button to apply the change.
    Keep within your plan limits

The maximum number of players you can set depends on the plan you have with RiverHosting. Setting a very high player count on a lower-tier plan may affect your server's performance.

    4. Restart your server to apply the change

    1. After saving, go to your server's main page by clicking Console in the left-hand menu.
    2. Click the Restart button to restart your server.
    3. Once the server has finished starting up, the new player limit will be active.
    All done

Your Icarus server will now enforce the new player limit. New players joining will be accepted up to the number you set, and any additional connection attempts beyond that will be declined until a slot opens up.

    Troubleshooting

    • The change does not seem to have taken effect. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If the old limit is still showing, try stopping the server fully and then starting it again rather than using a simple restart.
    • Players still cannot join even though slots are available. Check the Whitelist or Bans settings under the Whitelist / Bans page in the left-hand menu to make sure those players are not restricted.
    • The server crashes or becomes unstable after increasing the slot count. This can happen if the player count exceeds what your current plan can handle comfortably. Consider reducing the slot count or upgrading your plan from the billing portal.
    • You cannot find the Max Players setting on the Server Config page. Try refreshing the page. If the setting is still missing, the RiverHosting support team can help you locate it.
