How to Enable and Configure a Password on Your Icarus Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to set a join password on your Icarus server from the RiverHosting panel so only the players you invite can get in.

By default, your Icarus server is open to anyone who knows its address. Setting a join password is the simplest way to keep your server private and make sure only your friends or trusted players can get in.

This guide walks you through finding and enabling the password option on your Icarus server using the RiverHosting panel. No file editing is needed.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Icarus server with RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • Your server must be running or stopped. Either state is fine for making this change, but you will need to restart the server after saving for the new password to take effect.
Tell your players before you change the password

If players are currently on the server, let them know you are about to add or change the password so they are not unexpectedly disconnected or locked out.

    1. Open your Icarus server settings

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Click on your Icarus server from the server list to open it.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.

The Server Config page is the built-in settings editor for your Icarus server. It lets you change common server options, including the server name, password, and other game settings, all without editing any files manually.

    2. Set your server password

    1. On the Server Config page, look for the password field. It is typically labelled something like Server Password or Join Password.
    2. Type the password you want to use. Choose something your players will be able to remember, but that is not too easy for strangers to guess.
    3. Once you have entered the password, click Save to apply the change.
    Password is case-sensitive

The join password on Icarus is case-sensitive, so make sure you share it with your players exactly as you typed it, including any capital letters.

    3. Restart your server to apply the change

Saving the Server Config does not automatically apply the new password while the server is running. You need to restart the server for the change to take effect.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Console to go back to the main server view.
    2. Click the Restart button to restart your server.
    3. Wait for the server to come back online. You will see a message in the console once it is ready.
    Your server is now password-protected

Once the server restarts, players will be prompted to enter the password before they can join.

    4. Share the password with your players

Your players will need to enter the password in Icarus when they try to join your server. When they look up your server in the in-game server browser or join by IP, the game will ask them to enter a password before the connection is allowed.

You can find your server's connection details, including its IP address and port, on the Network page in the left-hand menu.

    Example

You might share the details with your group like this: "Server IP is shown on the Network page of the panel. Password is: SurvivalCrew2025"

    5. How to remove or change the password later

If you want to remove the password or change it to something new, just repeat the steps above.

    • To remove the password entirely, go back to Server Config, clear the password field so it is blank, and save. Then restart the server.
    • To change the password, enter the new password in the field, save, and restart the server.
    Always restart after changing

Any time you update the password field in Server Config, you must restart the server before the change takes effect in the game.

    Troubleshooting

    • Players say the password is not working. Double-check the password in Server Config and make sure the server was restarted after saving. Remind players that the password is case-sensitive.
    • The password field is not showing up. Make sure you are on the Server Config page in the left-hand menu, not the Startup tab or another section.
    • The server is not restarting. Go to the Console page and check for any error messages. If the server appears stuck, use the Stop button and then Start to bring it back up manually.
    • You forgot the password you set. Go back to Server Config and check the password field. It will show the value you last saved.
