How to Use the In-Panel RCON Console on Your Garry's Mod Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to use the built-in RCON console on your Garry's Mod server in the RiverHosting panel so you can run admin commands without any extra tools.

The RCON page in the RiverHosting panel gives you a direct line to your Garry's Mod server so you can run admin commands, kick or ban players, change settings, and more, all without needing a third-party RCON tool or any technical setup.

This guide walks you through finding the RCON page and using it to send commands to your server from inside the panel.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Garry's Mod server on RiverHosting.
    • Your server must be running before you can send RCON commands. If the server is offline, start it first from the main server page.
    • You will need your RCON password. This is set in your server config. If you have not set one, see the note below.
    Server must be online

The RCON console only works while your server is running. If your server is stopped or crashed, start it from the panel before trying to connect.

    1. Open the RCON page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Select your Garry's Mod server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click RCON.

The RCON page will load a simple console interface directly inside the panel. You do not need to download any software or configure a separate connection.

    No external tool needed

The built-in RCON page replaces tools like HLSW or RCONit. Everything runs inside your browser from the RiverHosting panel.

    2. Connect to your server via RCON

    1. On the RCON page, you will see a password field and a connect button.
    2. Enter your RCON password in the password field.
    3. Click Connect (or the equivalent button shown on the page).
    4. Once connected, the console area will become active and you can start typing commands.
    Where is my RCON password?

Your RCON password is set in your server configuration. Go to Server Config in the left-hand menu and look for the RCON password field. Set a password there, save it, and then restart your server before trying to connect through the RCON page.

    3. Run commands through the RCON console

Once you are connected, you can type commands directly into the input field at the bottom of the RCON console and press Enter to send them.

Some common commands you might use on a Garry's Mod server include:

    • status - Lists all currently connected players with their Steam IDs and connection details.
    • kick <name> - Kicks a player from the server by their name.
    • banid <minutes> <steamid> - Bans a player by their Steam ID for a set number of minutes. Use 0 for a permanent ban.
    • changelevel <mapname> - Changes the current map on the server.
    • sv_cheats 0 or sv_cheats 1 - Disables or enables cheat commands on the server.
    • say <message> - Sends a message to all players in the in-game chat as the server.
Garry's Mod uses Source engine commands

Garry's Mod runs on the Source engine, so most standard Source server commands work through RCON. If you are unsure whether a command will work, check the Garry's Mod wiki or the documentation for any game modes or addons you are running.

    4. Disconnect when you are finished

When you are done sending commands, you can simply close the RCON page or navigate away. Your server will keep running normally. The RCON session does not affect your server's uptime or player sessions in any way.

    Troubleshooting

    • Wrong password error: Double-check the RCON password in your Server Config page. Make sure you saved it and restarted the server after changing it.
    • Connection refused or timeout: Make sure your server is fully started. Give it a minute or two after startup before trying RCON, as the server needs to finish loading before it accepts RCON connections.
    • Commands are not working: Some commands require the server to have a specific game mode or addon active. Check that the command is valid for your current setup.
    • RCON page is blank or not loading: Try refreshing the page. If the issue continues, check the Console tab to see if your server has logged any errors on startup.
    Avoid sharing your RCON password

Anyone with your RCON password can run any server command. Keep it private and change it if you think it has been shared without your permission. You can update it any time from the Server Config page.
