How to Configure Your Garry's Mod Server Settings from the Panel
Learn how to configure your Garry's Mod server settings from the RiverHosting panel so you can customize your server without editing files by hand.
When you rent a Garry's Mod server from RiverHosting, you can manage the most important settings directly from the panel without touching any configuration files manually. This guide walks you through each built-in tool available for your Garry's Mod server and explains how to use them.
Before you start
- Make sure your server has been created and appears in your RiverHosting panel.
- You will need owner or full-access permissions on the server to change settings.
- It is a good idea to stop your server before making major configuration changes, then start it again once you are done.
If your server has active players or a running session, warn them before you stop the server to apply changes.
1. How to change core server settings using Server Config
The Server Config page is the quickest way to change the most commonly used settings for your Garry's Mod server. You do not need to edit any files to use it.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Click on your Garry's Mod server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- You will see a form with settings for your server such as the server name, password, maximum players, and game mode.
- Update the settings you want to change.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
- Restart your server so the new settings take effect.
Most changes made in Server Config will only take effect after you restart the server. Use the restart button at the top of your server page after saving.
2. How to mount additional game content using Content Mounts
Garry's Mod supports content from other Source games you may own, such as Counter-Strike: Source or Half-Life 2. The Content Mounts page lets you enable that content on your server so players can use textures, models, and sounds from those games without seeing errors.
- In the left-hand menu, click Content Mounts.
- You will see a list of supported games that can be mounted as content sources.
- Toggle on the games whose content you want to make available on your server.
- Save your changes.
- Restart your server for the mounted content to load correctly.
Players who join your server may see pink-and-black checkerboard textures or missing models if the server is running a game mode or map that requires content from another Source game. Mounting the right games fixes this for everyone.
3. How to run admin commands using the RCON console
The RCON page gives you a built-in admin console inside the panel. You can use it to run server commands in real time without needing an external RCON tool or direct access to the server.
- In the left-hand menu, click RCON.
- The RCON console will open in the panel.
- Type a command into the input field at the bottom and press Enter or click Send.
- The server's response will appear in the console output above.
Common commands you might run from the RCON console include changing the map, kicking a player, or adjusting server variables on the fly.
The RCON page is best for live commands. If you want to read your server's startup output or watch what is happening in real time, use the Console tab in the left-hand menu instead.
4. How to find your server's connection details
If you or your players need the server's IP address or port to connect, you can find these details on the Network page.
- In the left-hand menu, click Network.
- You will see your server's IP address and the port players use to connect.
- Share these details with your players so they can add the server to their favorites in the Steam server browser or connect directly.
If you want players to connect using a friendly address instead of an IP and port, you can set one up using the Subdomain Manager. Head to the Subdomain Manager in the left-hand menu and choose a subdomain from one of the available base domains, such as playriver.net, playminecraft.pro, or playriver.xyz.
Troubleshooting
- Changes are not showing up after saving. Make sure you restarted the server after saving. Many settings are only applied when the server starts up.
- The server will not start after a config change. Open the Console tab and look for any error messages near the top of the startup output. A typo or unsupported value in a setting can prevent the server from starting.
- Players still see missing textures after mounting content. Make sure you saved your content mount changes and fully restarted the server. Players may also need to own the mounted game on Steam for some content to load correctly on their end.
- RCON is not responding. Make sure the server is fully started before trying to send RCON commands. If the server is still starting up, wait until the Console shows it is ready.
- I cannot find a setting I need. Some advanced settings may need to be edited in a configuration file. Use the File Manager in the left-hand menu to browse and edit server files directly.
