How to Rename Your Garry's Mod Server
Learn how to change your Garry's Mod server name from the RiverHosting panel so players can find and recognise your server in the browser list.
Your Garry's Mod server name is the first thing players see when they browse for servers. Whether you are launching a new community or just want a name that better reflects your server's theme, changing it takes only a minute from the RiverHosting panel.
Before you start
- You need an active Garry's Mod server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
- Log in to the panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- The server name change takes effect after a restart, so plan to do this during a quiet period if players are active.
A clear, descriptive server name helps players find you again later. Including your community name or the gamemode you run is a great starting point.
1. Open the Server Config page
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Click on your Garry's Mod server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
The Server Config page is a built-in editor for your server's main settings. You can change common options here without editing any files by hand.
2. Change the server name
- On the Server Config page, find the Server Name (or Hostname) field.
- Clear the existing name and type the new name you want players to see in the server browser.
- Click Save to apply the change.
The name you enter here appears in the Garry's Mod server browser and in the server info panel when a player is connected. Keep it under 64 characters for best compatibility.
3. Restart the server to apply the change
- After saving, click the Restart button at the top of your server page.
- Wait for the server to come back online. This usually takes less than a minute.
- Once the server is running, the new name will appear in the server browser for all players.
Restarting the server will disconnect anyone who is currently playing. Let your players know before you restart if the server is busy.
Troubleshooting
- The name has not updated in the server browser. Server browser listings can take a few minutes to refresh. Wait two to three minutes and then search again.
- The Server Config page did not save. Make sure you clicked the Save button before navigating away. Try saving again and then restarting.
- The name still shows the old value after restarting. Open Server Config again and confirm the new name is still saved there. If it reverted, save it again and restart once more.
- Special characters are not displaying correctly. Some special characters may not render well in the server browser. Stick to standard letters, numbers, and basic punctuation for the most reliable results.
