How to Connect to Your Factorio Server
Learn how to find your Factorio server's connection details in the RiverHosting panel and join your game so you and your friends can start building together.
Once your Factorio server is up and running, the next step is actually joining it. This article walks you through where to find your server's connection details in the RiverHosting panel and how to use them inside Factorio to join your game.
Before you start
- Your Factorio server must be running before you can connect. You can check its status and start it from your server page at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Make sure you have Factorio installed on your computer. You can buy and download it from the official Factorio website or through Steam.
- If you set a password on your server, have it ready. You can find and change your password from the Server Config page in the left-hand menu.
If your server is stopped, players will not be able to connect. Head to your server page in the panel and click Start before trying to join.
1. Find your server's IP address and port
Your Factorio server has a unique IP address and port that players use to connect. Here is how to find them.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Select your Factorio server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Network.
- On the Network page, you will see your server's IP address and the game port. Note both of these down, as you will need them in the next step.
A port is a number that helps direct traffic to the right service on a server. Factorio uses a specific port number alongside the IP address so your game client knows exactly where to connect.
2. Connect to your server inside Factorio
Now that you have your IP address and port, you can connect directly through the Factorio game client.
- Open Factorio on your computer.
- From the main menu, click Multiplayer.
- Click Connect to address.
- Type in your server's IP address followed by a colon and the port number.
Your connection address should look like this: 123.45.67.89:34197 where the IP address and port come from the Network page in your panel.
- Press Connect.
- If your server has a password set, Factorio will ask you to enter it before joining.
Factorio remembers recently joined servers, so once you connect successfully the address will appear in your recent servers list and you will not need to type it again.
3. Set up a custom subdomain so your address is easier to share
If you want to give your players a memorable address instead of a string of numbers, you can set up a free custom subdomain through the RiverHosting panel.
- In the left-hand menu of your server page, click Subdomain Manager.
- Choose a subdomain name and select one of the available base domains.
- Save your subdomain.
- Share the subdomain with your players as the address they use to connect.
You could create something like factory.playriver.net or spaghetti.playriver.xyz so your players have an easy address to remember. ::: :::info[Subdomain and port] Even with a custom subdomain, players may still need to include the port number when connecting, for example factory.playriver.net:34197. Check the Network page for the correct port.
Troubleshooting
- Cannot connect or connection timed out. Make sure your server is actually running. Go to your server page in the panel and check that the status shows as online. If it is stopped, click Start and wait a moment before trying again.
- Wrong password. Your server password is set in the Server Config page. Open Server Config in the left-hand menu and check what password is configured, then try connecting again.
- Connection refused or cannot reach the server. Double-check the IP address and port from the Network page. Make sure you are entering them correctly in the format
IP:port. - Game version mismatch. Your Factorio client version must match the server version. You can check and update the server version from the Startup page or contact support for help.
- Friends cannot join but you can. Make sure you are sharing the correct IP address and port from the Network page, not your local network address.
