How to Use the User Groups Settings on Your Enshrouded Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to configure user groups on your Enshrouded server from the RiverHosting panel so you can control what each player is allowed to do.

Enshrouded lets you split players into different groups, each with its own set of permissions. This means you can give trusted friends extra control, keep casual players in a more limited role, and protect your server from unwanted changes. The RiverHosting panel makes this straightforward through the dedicated User Groups page, so you do not need to touch any config files directly.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Enshrouded server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • Your server should be running before you make changes. Some changes may require a restart to take effect.
    • You will need the player names or identifiers for anyone you want to assign to a specific group.
    What are user groups?

Enshrouded organises players into groups such as Admin, Friend, and Guest. Each group controls what a player can build, destroy, or interact with on your server. Admins typically have full access, while guests may have limited permissions.

    1. How to open the User Groups page

    1. Go to panel.riverhosting.com and select your Enshrouded server.
    2. In the left-hand menu, click User Groups.
    3. The page will load with the current group configuration for your server.
    Can't see User Groups?

If the User Groups option does not appear in the left-hand menu, make sure you are viewing your Enshrouded server and not a different game server on your account.

    2. How to understand the default groups

Enshrouded uses a set of default permission groups. You will typically see the following groups listed on the User Groups page:

    • Admin: Full access to the server, including building, destroying, and server management commands.
    • Friend: Can build and interact freely but may not have access to admin-level controls.
    • Guest: The most restricted group, usually limited to basic interaction and play.

Each group has its own set of toggles or settings that define exactly what players in that group can do. Review each group carefully before assigning players to them.

    Group names may vary

The exact group names and permission options shown depend on the version of Enshrouded your server is running. The three groups above represent the most common default setup.

    3. How to assign a player to a group

    1. On the User Groups page, locate the group you want to add a player to, such as Admin or Friend.
    2. Find the player list or input field for that group.
    3. Enter the player's name or identifier into the field provided.
    4. Save your changes using the save or apply button on the page.
    5. Restart your server from the panel so the new group assignment takes effect.
    Restart required

Group changes are not applied instantly while the server is running. Always restart your server after making changes on the User Groups page to ensure the new permissions are loaded correctly.

    4. How to remove a player from a group

    1. Go to User Groups in the left-hand menu.
    2. Find the group the player is currently assigned to.
    3. Remove the player's name or identifier from the list.
    4. Save your changes.
    5. Restart your server to apply the updated group settings.

If a player is removed from a specific group, they will fall back to the default Guest permissions the next time they connect.

    5. How to adjust the permissions for a group

    1. Open the User Groups page from the left-hand menu.
    2. Locate the group whose permissions you want to change, for example the Guest group.
    3. Review the available permission toggles or options for that group. These may include settings such as build permissions, destruction permissions, and interaction access.
    4. Enable or disable the options that match the experience you want for players in that group.
    5. Save your changes and restart the server to apply them.
    Start restrictive for guests

If you are running a public or semi-public server, it is a good idea to keep guest permissions minimal at first. You can always loosen them later once you know your community.

    Troubleshooting

    • Changes do not seem to apply after saving: Make sure you restarted the server after saving. The server must reload its configuration for group changes to take effect.
    • A player still has the wrong permissions after a restart: Double-check that their name or identifier was entered correctly and saved to the right group. Even a small typo can prevent the assignment from working.
    • The User Groups page is not visible: Confirm you are logged in to the correct server on the panel. If the page is still missing, contact RiverHosting support for assistance.
    • Players are connecting as Guest even though they were assigned to Friend: Check that the server was fully restarted and not just stopped and started within a few seconds. Allow the server a moment to fully shut down before starting it again.
    • You want to reset all group settings: You can remove all custom player entries and re-save a clean group configuration. This will return all players to Guest permissions on their next connection.
    Be careful with Admin access

Only grant Admin group membership to players you fully trust. Admins can make significant changes to your server world, including removing structures and running server commands.
