How to Upgrade Your Don't Starve Together Server to a New Version

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to update your Don't Starve Together server to the latest version from the RiverHosting panel so your players can always connect without version mismatch errors.

Keeping your Don't Starve Together server up to date is important. When Klei releases a game update, players on the latest client version may not be able to connect to an older server. Updating takes only a few steps from the RiverHosting panel and you do not need any technical knowledge to do it.

    Before you start

    • Make sure you have access to your server at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • Let your players know the server will be offline briefly while the update runs.
    • Take a backup before updating. Go to Backups in the left-hand menu and create one. This protects your world and cluster settings in case anything goes wrong.
    Save your world first

Always create a backup before updating. Updating replaces server files and a backup makes sure you can recover your world if needed.

    1. How to update your Don't Starve Together server

The RiverHosting panel updates your Don't Starve Together server by re-running the install process, which pulls the latest version of the game directly from Steam. Here is how to do it:

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Click on your Don't Starve Together server to open it.
    3. Click Console in the left-hand menu to open the server console.
    4. If the server is running, click the Stop button and wait for it to fully stop.
    5. Once the server is stopped, click the Reinstall option. On most servers this is found in the Settings page in the left-hand menu, at the bottom of the page.
    6. Confirm the reinstall when prompted. The panel will download and install the latest Don't Starve Together dedicated server files from Steam.
    7. When the install finishes, start your server again using the Start button.
    Check the console after starting

After the server starts, watch the Console output for a few seconds. You will see the server version printed in the log. This confirms the update applied correctly.

    2. How to confirm the update worked

Once your server is back online, you can quickly confirm it is running the latest version in two ways.

    1. Open the Console tab in the panel and look at the startup log. The server version number is printed near the top when it starts.
    2. Try connecting from your Don't Starve Together game client. If your client and server versions match, you will be able to join without any version error.
    Version numbers

Don't Starve Together displays its build number rather than a traditional version number. As long as you and your players are all on the same build, you will be able to connect.

    3. What to do if your cluster or cave settings were reset

A reinstall updates the server software but should leave your world files and cluster configuration in place. However, if you notice that settings have changed after the update, you can restore them from a backup you made before updating.

    1. Go to Backups in the left-hand menu.
    2. Find the backup you created before updating.
    3. Click Restore next to that backup.
    4. Confirm the restore and then start your server again.
    Restoring replaces current files

Restoring a backup will overwrite your current server files. Only do this if something went wrong during the update and you need to go back to your previous state.

    Troubleshooting

    • Players still cannot connect after the update. Ask players to fully close Don't Starve Together and relaunch it from Steam so their client picks up the latest update. Both the server and the client must be on the same build.
    • The server fails to start after reinstalling. Open the Console tab and look for any error messages. A common cause is a missing or invalid Cluster Token. Check the Cluster Token page in the left-hand menu and make sure your token is still set correctly.
    • Mods are causing errors after the update. Klei updates can sometimes break mods that have not been updated by their authors. Go to the Mods page and try disabling mods one at a time to find the one causing problems. Check the Steam Workshop page for that mod to see if an update is available.
    • The reinstall button is not visible. Make sure you are on the Settings page and that the server is fully stopped. The reinstall option only appears when the server is offline.
