How to Upgrade Your Space Engineers Server to a New Version
Learn how to update your Space Engineers server to the latest version from the RiverHosting panel so your server stays compatible and your players can keep connecting.
Keeping your Space Engineers server up to date is important. When the game receives a new update, players who have updated their game client will not be able to join a server running an older version. Updating your server through the RiverHosting panel is straightforward and only takes a few steps.
Before you start
- Make sure you have a recent backup of your world before updating. Updates can occasionally cause unexpected changes to your save data.
- Let your players know the server will be going offline briefly during the update.
- You will need access to your server at panel.riverhosting.com.
Always create a backup of your Space Engineers world before applying an update. If anything goes wrong, you can restore your save from the Backups tab.
1. How to back up your world before updating
It is a good habit to save a fresh backup right before any update. Here is how to do it:
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Space Engineers server.
- Click Backups in the left-hand menu.
- Click the Create Backup button.
- Wait for the backup to complete before continuing. You will see it listed once it is ready.
After the backup finishes, you can download it to your own computer for extra peace of mind. Click the three-dot menu next to the backup and select Download.
2. How to update your Space Engineers server to the latest version
The RiverHosting panel handles Space Engineers updates through the server's startup process. When you trigger a fresh install or restart with an update check, the panel pulls the latest version automatically.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Space Engineers server.
- If your server is currently running, click the Stop button and wait for it to fully stop.
- Click Startup in the left-hand menu.
- Check that your startup settings look correct. The panel uses these settings each time the server starts to fetch the right version of the game files.
- Go back to the main server page and click Start.
- The server will download and apply the latest Space Engineers server files before it finishes starting up.
When your Space Engineers server starts, the panel checks for and installs the latest available server files automatically. You do not need to manually download or upload any files.
3. How to confirm the update was successful
Once the server has started, you can verify that it is running the correct version.
- Click Console in the left-hand menu.
- Look through the startup log output for a line that references the Space Engineers server version or build number.
- Compare that version number to the latest version shown in the official Space Engineers changelog or Steam update notes.
- Try joining the server from your game client to confirm everything is working as expected.
If the server does not start properly after an update, open the Console tab and read the log carefully. Error messages there will usually tell you what went wrong so you or the support team can address it quickly.
Troubleshooting
- The server will not start after the update. Open the Console tab and check for error messages. A corrupted world file or a mod that is incompatible with the new version is a common cause. Try disabling mods temporarily using the Mods page in the left-hand menu.
- Players still cannot connect after the update. Make sure your players have also updated their Space Engineers game client to the same version. Version mismatches between the client and server will prevent connection.
- The server appears to be running an old version. Stop the server fully, then start it again. The update check runs at startup, so a clean restart is usually enough to fetch the latest files.
- Your world is missing or broken after the update. Restore from the backup you created earlier. Go to Backups, find your backup, and click Restore.
- Mods are causing problems after the update. Visit the Mods page in the left-hand menu and temporarily remove any mods that may not yet be compatible with the new version. Check the mod author's page for update status.
