How to Manage Saves and Worlds on Your Don't Starve Together Server

    4 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to manage your Don't Starve Together server's world generation, saves, and cluster settings from the RiverHosting panel so your world stays exactly the way you want it.

Don't Starve Together uses a cluster system to run your world, and it comes with some unique panel pages that make it easy to manage your save, configure your world generation, and control who can join. This guide walks you through each of those areas so you can get your server set up exactly how you want it.

    Before you start

    • Make sure you have an active Don't Starve Together server through RiverHosting.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Don't Starve Together server.
    • Stop your server before making changes to world generation or saves. This avoids file conflicts that could corrupt your data.
    Stop before editing

Always stop your server before changing world generation settings or deleting saves. Making changes while the server is running can cause data loss.

    1. How to set your Cluster Token

Before your server can run properly, it needs a Cluster Token. This is a key that links your server to your Klei account and lets players connect through the in-game server browser.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Cluster Token.
    2. Enter your token in the field provided. You can generate a token from your Klei account page at accounts.klei.com.
    3. Save the token.
    4. Restart your server for the change to take effect.
    One token per cluster

Each Don't Starve Together server uses one Cluster Token. If you regenerate or replace your token on the Klei website, you will need to update it here as well.

    2. How to configure your cluster settings

The Cluster Config page controls the overall settings for your server cluster, such as the server name, description, game mode, and whether a password is required to join.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Cluster Config.
    2. Update the settings you want to change. Common options include:
      • Server name: The name that appears in the server browser.
      • Description: A short description players see before joining.
      • Game mode: Options typically include Survival, Endless, and Wilderness.
      • Password: Set a password to restrict who can join.
      • Max players: The maximum number of players allowed on your server at once.
    3. Save your changes.
    4. Restart your server to apply the updated cluster settings.

    3. How to manage world generation settings

The World Generation page lets you control how your world is generated. You can adjust things like world size, resource amounts, season lengths, and which features are enabled before your world is created.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click World Generation.
    2. Review and adjust the options for the Overworld and, if enabled, the Caves layer.
    3. Save your changes.
    This resets your world

Changing world generation settings and regenerating your world will permanently delete your existing save. Make a backup first if you want to keep your current progress.

    4. How to enable or disable Caves

Don't Starve Together supports a separate underground Caves layer. You can turn this on or off from a dedicated page in the panel.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Cluster & Caves.
    2. Toggle the Caves option on or off depending on what you want.
    3. Save the setting and restart your server.
    Caves adds a second layer

Enabling Caves creates a second shard running alongside your main Overworld. This uses a bit more server memory, but it unlocks a whole extra layer of content for your players.

    5. How to manage admins and player access

The Admins & Access page lets you control who has admin rights on your server and whether the server is open to everyone or restricted to specific players.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Admins & Access.
    2. To add an admin, enter their Klei user ID and save. Admins can use in-game commands to manage players without needing console access.
    3. To restrict access, you can use whitelist options on the same page so only approved players can join.
    4. Save your changes and restart the server to apply them.

    6. How to install mods on your server

You can add mods to your Don't Starve Together server directly from the panel using the Mods page.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Mods.
    2. Enter the Workshop mod IDs for the mods you want to use. You can find these in the URL of each mod on the Steam Workshop.
    3. Save the mod list and restart your server.
    Players need mods too

For most mods, every player who joins your server will also need to subscribe to the same mods on the Steam Workshop. Server-side only mods are the exception.

    Troubleshooting

    • Server does not appear in the browser: Check that your Cluster Token is set correctly on the Cluster Token page. An invalid or missing token will prevent your server from being listed.
    • Caves are not loading: Make sure Caves is enabled on the Cluster & Caves page and that your server has restarted since the change was made.
    • Mods are not working: Double-check the Workshop mod IDs on the Mods page. Make sure each ID is correct and that you have saved and restarted after adding them.
    • World settings are not applying: If your world already exists, generation settings only take effect when a new world is generated. You will need to wipe and regenerate the world for those changes to appear.
    • Players cannot join: Check the Cluster Config page to confirm no password is set unexpectedly, and review the Admins & Access page to make sure the server is not restricted to a whitelist unintentionally.
