How to Configure Your Don't Starve Together Server Settings from the Panel

    4 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to adjust your Don't Starve Together server settings from the RiverHosting panel so you can customise your cluster, caves, and world options without editing any files manually.

Don't Starve Together gives you a lot of control over how your server runs, from world generation rules to cave settings and player access. The RiverHosting panel puts all of the most important controls in dedicated pages so you can make changes quickly without touching any configuration files directly.

This guide walks you through the key pages available for your Don't Starve Together server and explains what each one does.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Don't Starve Together server with RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com and open your Don't Starve Together server.
    • Stop your server before making configuration changes. Some settings only apply on the next startup.
    Stop your server first

Most configuration changes take effect when the server starts up. Apply your changes while the server is stopped, then start it again to see the results.

    1. Set up your cluster token

Before your Don't Starve Together server can go online, it needs a valid cluster token. This token links your server to your Klei account and is required by the game.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Cluster Token.
    2. Paste your cluster token into the field provided. You can generate a token from inside Don't Starve Together by going to the main menu, then Play, then Account, then Generate Server Token.
    3. Click Save to apply it.
    One token per cluster

Each cluster token is tied to your Klei account. Keep it private and do not share it with others. If your token is ever compromised, you can regenerate one from inside the game.

    2. Configure your cluster settings

The Cluster Config page is where you set the core options for your server cluster. This includes your server name, description, game mode, maximum players, and password.

    1. Click Cluster Config in the left-hand menu.
    2. Set your server name and description so players can find and identify your server in the browser.
    3. Choose a game mode. The main options are Survival, Endless, and Wilderness. Each changes how death, respawning, and world resets work.
    4. Set the maximum number of players allowed at once.
    5. If you want to restrict who can join, add a password. Leave it blank for a public server.
    6. Click Save when you are happy with your settings.
    Game mode summary

Survival resets the world when all players die. Endless keeps the world going no matter what. Wilderness drops players in at a random point and removes respawning. Pick the mode that suits how you and your friends want to play.

    3. Turn caves on or off

Don't Starve Together supports a separate underground Caves world that players can enter through sinkholes. You can enable or disable Caves from the panel.

    1. Click Cluster & Caves in the left-hand menu.
    2. Toggle the Caves world on or off using the switch provided.
    3. Save your changes.

When Caves are enabled, the panel runs a second world shard alongside your main overworld. Both shards need to be running at the same time for players to travel between them.

    Caves use extra resources

Running Caves adds a second world to your server, which uses more memory and CPU. If your server feels slow with Caves enabled, consider upgrading your plan from the billing portal.

    4. Customise your world generation

The World Generation page lets you control what the world looks like when it is first created. You can adjust things like resource frequency, season length, starting conditions, and more.

    1. Click World Generation in the left-hand menu.
    2. Review the options for the overworld and, if Caves are enabled, for the cave world separately.
    3. Adjust the sliders or dropdowns for the settings you want to change, such as season length, resource amounts, or starting inventory.
    4. Click Save to apply your choices.
World generation only applies to new worlds

These settings only take effect when a new world is generated. Changing them will not modify your existing world. If you want to start fresh with new settings, you will need to wipe your world first from the File Manager.

    5. Manage admins and access

The Admins & Access page is where you control who has admin privileges on your server and whether the server is open to everyone or restricted.

    1. Click Admins & Access in the left-hand menu.
    2. To add an admin, enter the player's Klei ID. Admins can use in-game commands such as kicking players, rolling back the world, and more.
    3. To remove an admin, find them in the list and remove their entry.
    4. Save your changes before restarting the server.
    Finding a Klei ID

A player's Klei ID looks like KU_xxxxxxxx. Players can find their own Klei ID in the game's profile screen or in the server log after they have connected at least once.

    6. Install mods for your server

Don't Starve Together has a large modding community on the Steam Workshop. You can add mods to your server from the Mods page in the panel.

    1. Click Mods in the left-hand menu.
    2. Add the Workshop IDs for the mods you want to install. You can find a mod's Workshop ID in its Steam Workshop URL.
    3. Configure any mod options that appear after adding the mod.
    4. Save your changes and restart the server.
    Clients need the mods too

For most mods, every player connecting to your server also needs to have those mods installed on their own game client. Let your players know which mods your server is running so they can subscribe to them before joining.

    Troubleshooting

    • Server is not appearing in the browser: Check that your cluster token is saved correctly under Cluster Token. A missing or invalid token will prevent your server from appearing publicly.
    • Players cannot travel to the Caves: Make sure Caves are enabled under Cluster & Caves and that both the overworld and cave shards are running. Check the Console for any shard errors.
    • World generation changes did not apply: World generation settings only apply when a new world is created. You will need to delete the existing world files and restart the server to generate a fresh world with your new settings.
    • Admins cannot use commands in-game: Double-check that the correct Klei ID is listed under Admins & Access and that the server was restarted after saving.
    • Server crashes after adding mods: A mod may be incompatible with your current game version or with another mod. Try removing recently added mods one at a time to find the cause. Check the Console for error messages.
