How to Install and Manage Mods on Your Don't Starve Together Server
Learn how to install and manage mods on your Don't Starve Together server using the RiverHosting panel so your world is ready with the right mods before your friends join.
Mods are one of the best ways to expand your Don't Starve Together experience. They can add new characters, change how the world generates, tweak gameplay balance, or introduce entirely new items and mechanics. The RiverHosting panel makes it straightforward to install and manage mods without touching any files manually.
Before you start
- Make sure your Don't Starve Together server is set up and has been started at least once. This ensures the base configuration files are in place.
- You will need the Workshop ID for any mod you want to install. You can find this in the mod's Steam Workshop URL. For example, if the URL ends in
?id=1079538195, the Workshop ID is1079538195. - It is a good idea to stop your server before making mod changes to avoid any conflicts during the process.
- All players who connect to your server will also need to have the same mods subscribed in their Steam Workshop library, unless the mod is server-side only.
Stop your server before adding or removing mods. This helps prevent save issues and ensures your changes take effect cleanly on the next startup.
1. How to add mods using the Mods page
The RiverHosting panel includes a dedicated Mods page for your Don't Starve Together server. This is the easiest way to manage your mod list.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Select your Don't Starve Together server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Mods.
- You will see a list of currently installed mods, along with an option to add new ones.
- Enter the Workshop ID of the mod you want to add into the input field.
- Click the button to add the mod to your list.
- Repeat this for each mod you want to install.
- When you are done, save your changes.
- Start your server. The panel will handle downloading and loading the mods automatically.
Go to the Steam Workshop page for the mod you want. Look at the page URL in your browser. The number at the end after ?id= is the Workshop ID you need to enter.
2. How to configure mod settings
Some mods have settings you can adjust, such as spawn rates, difficulty tweaks, or feature toggles. These are usually configured through the world settings rather than a separate file.
- In the left-hand menu, click World Generation.
- Look for the mod configuration section, where installed mods with adjustable settings will appear.
- Change the options to suit your preferences.
- Save your changes before starting the server.
Some mods work with fixed settings and do not expose any options. If a mod does not appear in the World Generation settings, it likely runs with its default configuration.
3. How to remove a mod
If you want to remove a mod from your server, the process is just as simple as adding one.
- In the left-hand menu, click Mods.
- Find the mod you want to remove from your list.
- Click the remove or delete option next to it.
- Save your changes.
- Restart your server for the change to take effect.
Removing a mod from a world that already has mod-added content (such as items or structures) can cause issues in your existing save. If possible, clean up mod-added content in-game before removing the mod, or start a fresh world after removal.
4. How to update your mod list for a new world
If you are starting fresh or regenerating your world, it is a good time to review and update your mod list.
- Stop your server.
- Go to Mods and update your mod list, adding or removing mods as needed.
- Go to World Generation to configure world settings and any mod options for the new world.
- Go to Worlds & Saves if you need to wipe or reset the existing world before starting fresh.
- Start your server. A new world will generate with your updated mod list applied.
Deleting or resetting your world through the Worlds & Saves page will permanently remove your existing progress. Make sure you have a backup from the Backups page before doing this.
Troubleshooting
- The server crashes on startup after adding mods. One or more mods may be incompatible with each other or with the current version of the game. Try removing the most recently added mod and starting again. Check the Console page for any error messages that name a specific mod.
- Players cannot see mod content in-game. Client-side mods need to be installed by each player through the Steam Workshop. Ask your players to subscribe to the same mods from the Workshop.
- A mod is not loading even though it is in the list. Double-check that the Workshop ID is correct. Open the mod's Steam Workshop page and compare the ID in the URL to what you entered in the panel.
- The server starts but mod settings are not applying. Make sure you saved your changes in both the Mods page and the World Generation page before starting the server. Some mod settings only apply to newly generated worlds.
- The Console shows a mod error but the server stays online. Some non-critical mod errors are logged as warnings and do not crash the server. Read the message carefully. If the mod is not critical, you may be able to continue. If the mod is essential to your setup, contact the mod author for help.
