How to Add and Manage Admins on Your Don't Starve Together Server
Learn how to add and remove admins on your Don't Starve Together server using the RiverHosting panel so trusted players can help you keep things running smoothly.
Admins on a Don't Starve Together server have extra power to keep the game running well. They can kick or ban disruptive players, use console commands in-game, and generally help you manage the server while you are playing or away. This guide shows you how to add and remove admins quickly from the RiverHosting panel.
Before you start
- You need an active Don't Starve Together server with RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
- You need the Klei ID of the player you want to make an admin. This is a unique identifier tied to each player's Klei (the game developer) account, not their Steam name.
- Your server does not need to be stopped before making these changes, but a restart is recommended after editing the admin list so the changes take full effect.
A Klei ID looks something like KU_xxxxxxxx. Players can find their own Klei ID by going to accounts.klei.com and signing in. It is listed on their account page.
1. How to find and open the Admins and Access page
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Click on your Don't Starve Together server to open its management page.
- In the left-hand menu, look for the Admins & Access page and click it.
Make sure you are looking at your Don't Starve Together server specifically. The left-hand menu changes depending on which game your server is running.
2. How to add a new admin
- On the Admins & Access page, you will see a field or list for adding admin Klei IDs.
- Enter the Klei ID of the player you want to promote to admin. It should follow the format
KU_xxxxxxxx. - Save your changes using the button on the page.
- Restart your server so the new admin entry takes effect. You can do this from the Console page using the restart button, or by stopping and starting the server.
If you enter the wrong Klei ID, the wrong person could get admin access. Ask the player to copy their Klei ID directly from their account page and paste it to you, rather than typing it out by hand.
3. How to remove an admin
- Go back to the Admins & Access page in the left-hand menu.
- Find the Klei ID of the admin you want to remove from the list.
- Delete or remove their entry from the list.
- Save your changes.
- Restart the server to apply the update.
Making someone an in-game admin only gives them extra permissions inside the Don't Starve Together server itself. It does not give them access to your RiverHosting panel or billing account. If you want someone to help manage the server panel, use the Users section instead.
4. How to give someone panel access instead
If you want a trusted person to be able to manage your server from the RiverHosting panel, such as starting, stopping, or adjusting settings, you can add them as a subuser. This is separate from in-game admin rights.
- In the left-hand menu, click Users.
- Enter the email address of the person you want to invite.
- Choose which panel permissions you want them to have.
- Send the invitation. They will receive an email to accept it.
Panel subuser access and in-game admin rights are two different things. A player can have one, both, or neither. Make sure you set up whichever type of access each person actually needs.
Troubleshooting
- The admin cannot use console commands in-game. Make sure you restarted the server after saving the Klei ID. Changes to the admin list usually only apply after a full server restart.
- The Klei ID does not seem to work. Check that the ID starts with
KU_and contains no extra spaces before or after it. Copy and paste rather than typing it manually. - The Admins and Access page is not visible. Confirm your server is running Don't Starve Together and not a different game. If you recently switched games using Game Changer, the menu may have updated.
- The player says they still do not have admin access after a restart. Ask them to fully disconnect from the server and reconnect. In-game admin status is sometimes only applied on a fresh connection.
