How to Change the Spawn Rate on Your Don't Starve Together Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to adjust creature and item spawn rates on your Don't Starve Together server from the RiverHosting panel so you can tune the difficulty and survival experience for your group.

Don't Starve Together lets you control how often creatures, resources, and other world elements appear in your world. Whether you want a more relaxed gathering experience or a brutal survival challenge, adjusting the spawn rates is one of the quickest ways to shape how your server feels for everyone playing.

The RiverHosting panel gives you a built-in way to change these settings without editing any files by hand. This guide walks you through exactly how to do it.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Don't Starve Together server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • Spawn rate changes take effect on the next world generation. If your world already exists, you will need to regenerate it for most spawn changes to apply.
    • Make sure you have a backup of your current world before regenerating. Visit the Backups tab to create one first.
    World regeneration required

Most spawn rate settings only take effect when a new world is generated. Changing these values will not affect your existing world until you start a fresh one.

    1. Open the World Generation settings

Don't Starve Together stores its world and spawn settings inside the World Generation page in your panel. Here is how to get there.

    1. Log in to panel.riverhosting.com and open your Don't Starve Together server.
    2. In the left-hand menu, click World Generation.
    3. You will see two tabs here: one for the Forest world and one for the Caves world. Choose the one you want to adjust.
    Caves world

If you have the Caves world enabled on your server, it has its own separate World Generation settings. Make sure to update both tabs if you want consistent spawn rates across both layers.

    2. Adjust the spawn rate settings

Inside the World Generation page, you will find a long list of world options grouped by category. Spawn-related settings cover creatures, resources, and environmental elements.

    1. Scroll through the options to find the categories you want to change. Common spawn-related options include creatures such as spiders, beehives, and hounds, as well as resources such as berry bushes, grass, and trees.
    2. Each setting has a dropdown or selector you can change. The typical values are:
      • None for completely removing that element from the world.
      • Less for a reduced number of spawns.
      • Default for the standard Klei-intended experience.
      • More for a higher number of spawns.
      • Most for the maximum number of spawns.
    3. Adjust each setting to match the experience you want for your players.
    4. When you are happy with your changes, click Save at the bottom of the page.
    Not sure where to start?

If you just want a slightly easier experience, try setting creature spawns like spiders and hounds to Less while leaving resource spawns at Default. That keeps the survival feel without overwhelming new players.

    3. Regenerate your world to apply the changes

Once you have saved your World Generation settings, you need to start a fresh world for the new spawn rates to take effect.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Cluster & Caves.
    2. Look for the option to regenerate or reset your world. Confirm the action when prompted.
    3. Your server will restart and generate a new world using the spawn settings you just saved.
This will delete your current world

Regenerating your world permanently removes your existing map and all progress tied to it. If you want to keep your current world, back it up first using the Backups tab before proceeding.

Once the server finishes starting up, connect to your server and you should see the new spawn rates in effect straight away.

    Troubleshooting

    • The spawn rates do not seem to have changed. Make sure you actually regenerated the world after saving. Simply restarting the server without regenerating will not apply World Generation changes.
    • I changed the Forest world but not the Caves world, and spawn rates feel different underground. The Caves world has its own separate settings in the World Generation page. Open the Caves tab and update those settings separately, then regenerate again.
    • The World Generation page is not visible in my menu. Make sure your server is fully set up and running Don't Starve Together. If the page is missing, contact RiverHosting support for help.
    • My saved settings reset after the regeneration. Check that you clicked Save on the World Generation page before triggering the regeneration. If the issue persists, reach out to support.
