How to Change the Difficulty on Your RuneScape: Dragonwilds Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to change the difficulty on your RuneScape: Dragonwilds server from the RiverHosting panel so you can tailor the challenge to suit your group.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds lets you tune how challenging the world feels for everyone on your server. Whether your group wants a relaxed adventure or a brutal survival experience, you can adjust the difficulty at any time from the RiverHosting panel without touching any files manually.

    Before you start

    • You need an active RuneScape: Dragonwilds server with RiverHosting.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • It is a good idea to stop your server before changing difficulty settings. This helps prevent any conflicts while the settings are being saved.
    • Let your players know before you make the change, as a server restart is required for the new difficulty to take effect.
    Save your world first

Changing the difficulty can affect enemy behaviour and loot across your world. If you want to keep a copy of your current world before making changes, create a backup from the Backups page before you continue.

    1. How to change the difficulty from the Server Config page

The easiest way to change the difficulty on your RuneScape: Dragonwilds server is through the built-in Server Config page. This gives you a clear, form-based editor so you do not need to edit any configuration files by hand.

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Click on your RuneScape: Dragonwilds server to open its management page.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
    4. Look for the difficulty setting. It is usually labelled something like Difficulty or Game Difficulty and is presented as a dropdown or selection field.
    5. Choose the difficulty level that suits your group. Common options include easy, normal, and hard, though the exact names may vary depending on your server version.
    6. Click Save to apply your changes.
    7. Restart your server from the main server page so the new difficulty takes effect. You can do this by clicking the Restart button at the top of the page.
Not sure which difficulty to pick?

If your group is new to RuneScape: Dragonwilds, starting on a lower difficulty gives everyone time to learn the game before increasing the challenge. You can always change it again later.

    2. How to confirm the difficulty has changed

After restarting your server, it is worth confirming the new difficulty is active before your players jump back in.

    1. Once the server has fully started, open the Console page from the left-hand menu.
    2. Check the startup log for any lines that reference the difficulty or game settings. If the new difficulty was picked up correctly, it will typically be noted during the startup sequence.
    3. Alternatively, log in to your server in-game and check the settings or options menu to confirm the difficulty shown there matches what you set.
Changes apply to the whole server

The difficulty setting applies to all players on your server, not just one player. Everyone will experience the same level of challenge once the change is saved and the server restarts.

    Troubleshooting

    • The difficulty does not seem to have changed after restarting. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If you closed the page without saving, the change will not have been applied. Go back to Server Config, set the difficulty again, save, and then restart.
    • The Server Config page does not show a difficulty option. Some settings may only appear for certain server versions or configurations. Try checking the Console startup log for clues, or reach out to support for guidance.
    • The server crashed after changing the difficulty. Restore your server from a backup if you made one before the change. If you did not make a backup, contact RiverHosting support and they can help you investigate the issue.
    • Enemy behaviour has not changed in-game. Some difficulty changes only fully take effect in areas you have not yet explored. Already-loaded areas may continue using the previous difficulty settings until they reload.
