How to Rename Your Don't Starve Together Server
Learn how to change your Don't Starve Together server name from the RiverHosting panel so your friends can find it easily and it stands out in the server list.
Your Don't Starve Together server name is the first thing players see when they browse the server list or share your server with friends. Changing it to something memorable makes your server easier to find and gives it its own identity. You can update the server name directly from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files by hand.
Before you start
- You need an active Don't Starve Together server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Your server must be stopped before saving changes to the cluster config. The panel will let you know if a restart is needed after saving.
Some cluster settings, including the server name, require a full restart to take effect. Stop your server before making changes to avoid any config conflicts.
1. Open the Cluster Config page
The Cluster Config page is where your server's name, description, and other global settings are stored. It is the fastest way to rename your server without touching any files manually.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Click on your Don't Starve Together server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Cluster Config.
The Cluster Config option appears in the left-hand menu alongside other Don't Starve Together pages such as Cluster & Caves, Cluster Token, Admins & Access, World Generation, and Mods.
2. Update the server name
- On the Cluster Config page, find the field labelled Cluster Name (this controls the name shown to players in the server list and when joining directly).
- Clear the existing name and type your new server name.
- Keep the name short and clear so players can read it easily in the browser.
- When you are happy with the new name, click Save or the equivalent save button on the page.
Aim for something short and easy to remember. Avoid special characters that might not display correctly in the server browser.
3. Restart your server to apply the change
After saving, the new name will not appear to players until the server has been restarted. Restarting applies the updated cluster config to the running server.
- Go to the Console page using the left-hand menu.
- Click the Start button if your server is stopped, or click Restart if it is already running.
- Wait for the server to finish starting up. You will see startup messages appear in the Console.
- Once the server is online, your new server name will be visible to players in the Don't Starve Together server browser.
Your server name has been updated. Players browsing the server list or joining with a direct link will now see the new name.
Troubleshooting
- The name did not change after saving: Make sure you clicked Save before restarting. Go back to Cluster Config to confirm the new name is still there.
- The old name still appears in the server browser: The Don't Starve Together server browser can take a few minutes to refresh. Wait a moment and try again, or reconnect directly using your server's IP and port from the Network page.
- The Cluster Config page is not visible: Make sure you are on a Don't Starve Together server. This page only appears for that game. If the menu looks wrong, check that the correct server is selected on the main panel dashboard.
- The name shows as blank after saving: This can happen if the field was left empty when saving. Open Cluster Config again, type in the name, and save once more before restarting.
- Changes were lost after saving: If the server was running during the save, the running process may have overwritten the config. Stop the server first, make the change, save, then start the server again.
