How to Enable and Configure a Password on Your 7 Days To Die Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to set a password on your 7 Days To Die server using the RiverHosting panel so only the players you invite can join your world.

By default, your 7 Days To Die server is open to anyone who has the address. Adding a password is a simple way to keep your world private and make sure only your friends and trusted players can get in. You can set this up in just a few steps from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files by hand.

    Before you start

    • You will need access to your server on the RiverHosting panel.
    • Your server will need to restart for the password change to take effect. Let any active players know before you make the change.
    • Make a note of the password you choose. Players will need to enter it every time they join.
    Heads up

Changing the password will not automatically kick players who are already connected. Restart the server after saving to apply the change properly.

    1. Open the Server Config page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Click on your 7 Days To Die server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.

The Server Config page is a built-in editor for your server's main settings. It lets you change common options without opening or editing any config files manually.

    2. Set your server password

    1. On the Server Config page, look for the Server Password field. It may appear near the top of the page in the general server settings area.
    2. Click the field and type the password you want to use.
    Choosing a good password

Use a short but memorable password so your friends can type it easily at the join screen. Avoid spaces if possible, as some clients may handle them differently.

    1. Once you have typed your password, click Save to store the change.

    3. Restart your server to apply the change

    1. After saving, go back to the main server page by clicking your server name or the dashboard icon in the left-hand menu.
    2. Click Restart to reboot the server.
    3. Wait for the server to come back online. This usually takes about a minute.
    Password is now active

Once the server restarts, players will be prompted to enter the password before they can join. Anyone without the correct password will be turned away at the connection screen.

    4. Share the password with your players

Your players will need both your server address and the password to connect. You can find your server's connection details, including the IP address and game port, on the Network page in the left-hand menu.

    Share the full connection details

Give your players the server address from the Network page along with the password so they have everything they need in one go.

    5. Remove or change the password later

If you want to open the server to the public again, or simply change the password, go back to Server Config and either clear the password field completely or type a new value. Save and restart the server the same way as before.

    Removing the password

Leaving the Server Password field blank will make your server open to all players again after the next restart.

    Troubleshooting

    • Players say the password is wrong. Double-check the value saved in Server Config. Copy and paste the password to your players rather than typing it out to avoid typos.
    • The password does not seem to be required after saving. Make sure you restarted the server after saving. Changes to Server Config only take effect after a full restart.
    • The Server Config page does not show a password field. Make sure your server is running 7 Days To Die and not another game. If the field is missing, contact RiverHosting support for help.
    • Players can still join without the password. If players were already connected before the restart, disconnect them and have them reconnect. The password requirement is enforced at the connection stage.
