How to Configure Your 7 Days To Die Server Settings from the Panel

    4 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to change your 7 Days To Die server settings from the RiverHosting panel so you can customise your game world without editing any files by hand.

When you rent a 7 Days To Die server through RiverHosting, you have full control over how your game world behaves. You can change settings like the server name, game difficulty, player limit, land claim options, and much more, all from the Server Config page in the RiverHosting panel. There is no need to edit configuration files by hand.

This guide walks you through finding and updating your server settings so your server is set up exactly the way you and your players want it.

    Before you start

    • Make sure you have an active 7 Days To Die server with RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, you can order one at riverhosting.com.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    • It is a good idea to stop your server before making changes to settings, then restart it once you are done. Some settings only take effect after a full restart.
    Stop your server first

Changing settings while the server is running may cause them to be overwritten when the server saves its configuration. Stop the server before making changes, then start it again when you are finished.

    1. Open the Server Config page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
    2. Click on your 7 Days To Die server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.

The Server Config page loads your server's current settings in a form-based editor. Each option is displayed with a label so you can see what you are changing. You do not need to know the file format or the underlying config file structure.

    No file editing needed

The Server Config page reads and writes your server's configuration file for you. Just update the fields you want to change and save.

    2. Change common server settings

Below are some of the most commonly adjusted settings and what they do. Your Server Config page may show additional options depending on the version of 7 Days To Die your server is running.

    Server name

This is the name players will see in the in-game server browser. Choose something that identifies your server clearly. Update the Server Name field with the name you want to use.

    Server password

If you want to restrict who can join your server, enter a password in the Server Password field. Leave it blank to keep the server open to anyone.

    Share the password carefully

If you set a server password, make sure you share it with the players you want to invite. Anyone without the password will not be able to join.

    Max players

The Max Players setting controls how many players can be on the server at the same time. Set this to a number that matches your hosting plan and how many friends you expect to play with.

    Game difficulty

The Game Difficulty setting controls how tough zombies and the overall experience will be. Options typically range from very easy to insane. Pick a level that suits your group.

    Day length and night length

These settings control how long in-game days and nights last. Shorter nights mean less time in the dark with zombies. Longer nights can make the game significantly harder.

    Zombie speed

The Zombie Speed setting lets you control how fast zombies move at night. Higher speeds make the game more intense. Keep this lower for a more casual experience.

    Player killing mode (PvP)

The Player Killing Mode setting controls whether players can damage each other. Set it to allow only self-defence, kill friends only, kill strangers only, or kill everyone depending on what kind of server you are running.

    Land claim size and durability

These settings control how large a player's claimed area is and how much extra durability land claim blocks provide. These are useful to adjust for survival servers where base raiding is part of the gameplay.

Once you have updated the settings you want to change, scroll down and click Save to apply them.

    3. Restart your server to apply changes

    1. After saving your settings, go back to the main server page by clicking your server name or the Console option in the left-hand menu.
    2. Click the Start button if your server is stopped, or Restart if it is already running.
    3. Watch the console output to confirm the server starts up without any errors.
    Settings applied

Once the server has fully started, all saved changes from the Server Config page will be active. Players who reconnect will experience the updated settings.

    4. Explore other useful pages for your 7 Days To Die server

The Server Config page covers the main gameplay and server identity settings, but the RiverHosting panel also gives you access to several other useful tools for managing your 7 Days To Die server.

    • Admins and Permissions: Use the Admins & Permissions page to grant admin rights to trusted players or adjust permission levels.
    • Mods: The Mods page lets you add mods to your server to change or extend gameplay.
    • Worlds & Saves: The Worlds & Saves page lets you manage or reset your world data.
    • Version / Branch: The Version / Branch page lets you switch between stable and experimental game branches or change the version your server is running.
    • Admin Interfaces: The Admin Interfaces page provides access to additional in-game admin tools.
Check the Version / Branch page after updates

If the game has recently updated and your server is not running the latest version, visit the Version / Branch page to update your server to the newest release.

    Troubleshooting

    • My settings did not save. Make sure you clicked the Save button at the bottom of the Server Config page before restarting. If the page timed out or refreshed before you saved, your changes may not have been written.
    • Changes are not taking effect after a restart. Stop the server fully, wait a few seconds, then start it again rather than using a quick restart. Some settings require a clean start to apply correctly.
    • The server is not appearing in the in-game browser. Check that the server name and network settings are correct. You can also find your server's direct connection details on the Network page in the left-hand menu.
    • Players cannot connect after I changed the password. Make sure you have shared the updated password with your players. They will need to enter the new password the next time they try to join.
    • The server crashed after changing a setting. Some settings have valid value ranges. If you entered a value outside the expected range, the server may fail to start. Revisit the Server Config page, reset the problematic field to its default or a sensible value, save, and restart.
