How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your Squad Server

    2 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to change the maximum number of players on your Squad server from the RiverHosting panel so you can control who gets in and keep performance steady.

By default, your Squad server comes with a preset player limit. You can raise that limit to open up more slots for a larger match, or lower it to keep things more controlled and ensure the server runs smoothly for your group. Either way, the change takes just a minute from the RiverHosting panel.

    Before you start

    • Make sure your Squad server is set up and showing in the RiverHosting panel.
    • You will need to restart your server after making this change for it to take effect.
    • Consider whether your current server plan can comfortably support the number of players you want to allow. More players means more load on the server.
    Check your plan first

If you are planning to raise the slot count significantly, make sure your server plan has enough resources to handle the extra players. A smooth 40-slot server is better than a laggy 80-slot one.

    1. Open the Server Config page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Click on your Squad server from the server list.
    3. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.

The Server Config page is the built-in editor for your Squad server settings. It lets you change common options without needing to edit any files manually.

    2. Change the maximum player count

    1. On the Server Config page, look for the setting that controls the maximum number of players. This is usually labelled something like Max Players or Max Clients.
    2. Click the field and enter the number of players you want to allow.
    3. Once you have entered the new value, click the Save button to apply your changes.
    Restart required

The new player limit will not take effect until you restart your server. Players already connected will not be affected mid-session, but the new cap will apply once the server comes back up.

    3. Restart your server to apply the change

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Console.
    2. Use the Restart button at the top of the Console page to restart your server.
    3. Wait for the server to finish starting up. You will see the startup messages appear in the console output.

Once the server is back online, the new player slot limit will be active. You or your players can verify this by checking the server browser in Squad, where the updated slot count will be visible.

    Change applied

Your Squad server is now running with the updated player limit. New players joining after the restart will see the correct slot count in the server browser.

    Troubleshooting

    • The slot count did not change after saving. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If you navigated away without saving, the change will not have been stored.
    • The server browser still shows the old limit. Server browser listings can take a few minutes to refresh. Wait a moment and check again. You can also try rejoining directly using your server's IP and port from the Network page.
    • Players are being kicked or refused entry even below the new limit. Some Squad configurations also have separate layer or team size limits that could affect player counts. If you are seeing unexpected behaviour, check the Server Config page for any other player-related settings.
    • The server is running slowly after increasing the limit. A higher player count puts more demand on the server. If performance drops, consider lowering the limit or upgrading your plan via the billing portal.
