How to Enable and Configure a Password on Your Sons Of The Forest Server
Learn how to set a password on your Sons Of The Forest server using the RiverHosting panel so only invited players can join your world.
Adding a password to your Sons Of The Forest server is one of the easiest ways to keep your world private. Whether you are playing with a small group of friends or just want to stop random players from dropping in, a server password means only people you invite can connect.
This guide walks you through setting and changing your server password from the RiverHosting panel. No file editing is needed.
Before you start
- You need an active Sons Of The Forest server with RiverHosting.
- Log in to the panel at panel.riverhosting.com and open your server.
- Make sure your server is stopped before saving changes to avoid any issues applying the new password.
If your server is already running with active players, let them know you are adding a password before you restart. They will need the password the next time they try to join.
1. Open the Server Config page
The Server Config page is where you control the main settings for your Sons Of The Forest server, including the password.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Click on your Sons Of The Forest server to open it.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
2. Set your server password
Once you are on the Server Config page, look for the password field. This is the value players will need to enter before they can join your server.
- Find the Server Password field on the Server Config page.
- Type the password you want to use. Pick something easy to share with your friends but not too obvious.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
Changes to the Server Config do not take effect until you restart the server. After saving, start or restart your server from the main server page for the password to become active.
3. Start or restart your server
After saving your new password, you need to restart the server so the change takes effect.
- Go back to the main page for your server by clicking the server name or the Console option in the left-hand menu.
- Click Start if your server is stopped, or Restart if it is currently running.
- Wait for the server to fully start before asking players to connect.
Once the server has restarted, the password is live. Any player who tries to join will be prompted to enter it before they can connect.
4. Share the password with your players
Your players will need both your server address and the password to connect. You can find your server's connection details on the Network page.
- In the left-hand menu, click Network.
- Copy the IP address and port shown there.
- Share the IP, port, and your chosen password with anyone you want to invite.
If you want a more memorable server address, you can set up a custom subdomain through the Subdomain Manager in the panel. Instead of sharing a raw IP and port, your players can connect using an address like survival.playriver.net.
5. How to remove or change the password later
If you want to change the password or remove it entirely, the process is the same as setting it.
- Go to Server Config in the left-hand menu.
- Update the password field with a new value, or clear it completely to remove the password requirement.
- Click Save.
- Restart the server for the change to take effect.
If you clear the password field and save, your server will become public. Anyone who knows your server address will be able to join without a password.
Troubleshooting
- Players say the password is not working. Make sure you restarted the server after saving the new password. Changes do not apply until the server restarts.
- The password field is empty but players are still being asked for one. The server may still be running with the old configuration. Restart it fully and try again.
- You have forgotten the current password. Go to Server Config and check the password field. The current value should be visible there. Update it if needed and restart.
- Players can still join without a password. Check that the Server Config was saved correctly before restarting. If the issue continues, try stopping the server fully, then starting it again rather than using Restart.
