How to Enable and Configure a Password on Your SCUM Server
Learn how to set a password on your SCUM server using the RiverHosting panel so only the players you invite can join your game.
Adding a password to your SCUM server is one of the easiest ways to keep your game private. Whether you are running a session just for friends or want to lock things down while you are setting up, the RiverHosting panel lets you set a password in just a few clicks without editing any files manually.
Before you start
- You need an active SCUM server on your RiverHosting account.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com and open your SCUM server.
- Your server should be stopped before you save configuration changes. You can restart it straight after.
Stopping your server before changing the password makes sure the new setting takes effect cleanly when the server starts back up.
1. How to set a password on your SCUM server
The easiest way to set a server password is through the built-in Server Config page in the panel. Follow these steps:
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and select your SCUM server.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- Look for the server password field. It may be labelled something like Server Password or Password depending on your panel version.
- Type your chosen password into that field. Use something easy to share with your friends but hard for strangers to guess.
- Click Save to apply the change.
- Go back to the main server page and click Start (or Restart if the server is already running).
Once the server restarts, players will be prompted to enter the password when they try to join. Anyone without it will not be able to get in.
2. How to share the server password with your players
After you have set a password, your players will need two things to join: the server address and the password itself.
- In the left-hand menu, click Network to find your server's IP address and game port.
- Copy the connection details and share them with your players along with the password you just set.
- Players can connect directly in SCUM by entering the server address and typing the password when prompted.
If you want to give players a memorable address instead of a raw IP, set up a custom subdomain in the Subdomain Manager. You can pick a base domain such as playriver.net, playminecraft.pro, or playriver.xyz and create something like survival.playriver.net.
3. How to remove or change the password
You can update or clear the password at any time from the same Server Config page.
- Open Server Config from the left-hand menu.
- To change the password, replace the current value with the new one and click Save.
- To remove the password entirely, clear the password field so it is blank and click Save.
- Restart the server to apply the change.
If you clear the password field, anyone who finds your server address will be able to join. Make sure this is what you want before saving.
Troubleshooting
- Players are not being asked for a password. Make sure you restarted the server after saving. A full restart is needed for the change to take effect, not just a stop and immediate reconnect attempt.
- Players enter the correct password but still cannot join. Double-check that there are no extra spaces before or after the password in the Server Config field. Passwords are case-sensitive, so confirm that players are typing it exactly as set.
- The password field is missing from Server Config. Try refreshing the page. If the field still does not appear, contact RiverHosting support for help.
- The server is full and players cannot join even with the password. Check the max player slot count in Server Config and increase it if needed.
