How to Rename Your Rust Server

    2 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to change your Rust server's name from the RiverHosting panel so players can find and recognize your server in the in-game server browser.

Your server's name is the first thing players see when they search for it in the Rust server browser. Giving it a clear, memorable name makes it easier for your community to find it and keeps things looking professional. You can change the name at any time from the RiverHosting panel without editing any files manually.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Rust server on your RiverHosting account.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com and open your Rust server.
    • Your server will need to restart after you save the change for the new name to appear in the server browser.
    Pick a good name

Keep your server name short and descriptive. Names that include the game mode or theme (for example "Vanilla Monthly" or "2x Solo/Duo") help players decide whether your server is right for them before they join.

    1. Open the Server Config page

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel and select your Rust server from the list.
    2. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
    3. The Server Config page contains the most common settings for your Rust server, including the server name, description, and other options.
    What is Server Config?

The Server Config page is a built-in editor for your Rust server's main settings. It lets you update options like the server name and description directly from the panel, so you do not need to edit any configuration files by hand.

    2. Change the server name

    1. On the Server Config page, look for the field labelled Server Name (sometimes shown as the hostname or server title field).
    2. Clear the existing name and type your new server name.
    3. If you also want to update the server description that appears in the server browser, update that field at the same time while you are here.
    4. When you are happy with the new name, click Save or the equivalent save button at the bottom of the page.
    Special characters

Avoid using special characters or very long names. Some characters may not display correctly in the Rust server browser, and names that are too long may get cut off.

    3. Restart your server to apply the change

    1. After saving, you need to restart your server so the new name takes effect.
    2. Go back to your server's main page by clicking Console in the left-hand menu, or use the restart button available at the top of the panel.
    3. Click Restart to reboot the server.
    4. Once the server has fully started, the new name will appear in the Rust server browser for players to find.
    Change confirmed

After the restart, search for your server by its new name in the Rust in-game server browser or community server list to confirm the change has taken effect.

    Troubleshooting

    • The name has not changed in the server browser. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If the old name is still showing, wait a few minutes as the Rust server browser can take a short time to refresh its listing.
    • The name field is blank after saving. Try refreshing the Server Config page. If the field is empty, re-enter the name and save again before restarting.
    • The server name contains strange symbols or is cut off. Remove any special characters, emoji, or colour codes from the name and try again. Plain letters and numbers are the most reliable.
    • The server is not appearing in the browser at all. Check the Console tab for any startup errors. If the server is online but not listed, it may take a few minutes for it to register with the Rust server network.
