How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your Rust Server

    2 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to change the maximum number of players on your Rust server using the RiverHosting panel so you can control who fits in your world without editing any files.

The maximum player slot count on your Rust server decides how many players can be connected at the same time. Whether you want to run a tight private server for a small group or open things up for a larger community, you can change this number quickly from the RiverHosting panel using the built-in Server Config page.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Rust server on RiverHosting. Log in at panel.riverhosting.com to access it.
    • Your server will need a restart for the new player limit to take effect. Let any active players know before you make the change.
    • The player slot count you can set may depend on the plan you are currently on. If you need more slots than your plan allows, you can upgrade from the billing portal.
    Save before you restart

Make a note of your current settings before changing anything. That way you can easily revert if something does not look right after the restart.

    1. How to change the max player slot count from Server Config

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Rust server.
    2. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
    3. Look for the setting labelled Max Players (sometimes shown as server.maxplayers depending on your panel layout).
    4. Change the number to the value you want. For example, enter 50 for a 50-player server.
    5. Scroll down and click Save to apply your changes.
    6. Restart your server from the top of the page using the Restart button so the new limit takes effect.
What does this setting actually do?

The max player slot count is the hard cap on simultaneous connections. Once the server is full, new players will see a message that the server is at capacity and will not be able to join until a slot opens up.

    2. How to verify the new player limit is active

    1. After the server has restarted, open the Console tab from the left-hand menu.
    2. Wait for the server to finish loading. You will see startup messages scroll through the console output.
    3. Once the server is online, check the Players section or look at the server details to confirm the slot count matches what you entered.
    4. You can also connect to the server yourself and check the player count display in the Rust server browser to confirm it shows the correct maximum.
    All done

Once your server shows the correct slot count in the browser or panel, the change has applied successfully.

    Troubleshooting

    • The player limit did not change after saving. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If the value reverted, try setting it again and saving, then do a clean restart.
    • The server is capping players below the number I set. Your hosting plan may have a slot limit. Check your plan details in the billing portal. If you need more slots, upgrading your plan will raise the cap.
    • I cannot find the Max Players setting in Server Config. Try scrolling through the full Server Config page, as settings are sometimes grouped differently. If you still cannot find it, the File Manager can be used to edit the server configuration file directly, but the Server Config page is the recommended method.
    • Players are still being refused entry even with slots available. Other settings such as a whitelist or password may be blocking connections. Check the Server Config page for any access restriction settings and adjust them if needed.
